For years, the standard Enphase Energy System involved multiple components, including the central IQ System Controller. While effective, the design presented opportunities for simplification. Based on direct feedback from installers, the 4th generation system has eliminated the System Controller, integrating its three core functions, the connection hub, the neutral-forming transformer, and the utility disconnect, into the new IQ Battery 10C and IQ Meter Collar. This is a prime example of iterative design leading to a more streamlined architecture, reduced installation complexity, and a cleaner aesthetic for the end-user. A significant step forward in residential energy storage. #Enphase #SolarEnergy #ProductDesign #Engineering #Innovation #EnergyStorage #SystemIntegration

Three takeaways from my chat with a Senior Design Manager working across major transmission upgrades 👇 - Clear shortage of experienced engineers with exposure to both substation and line design. - Demand is continuing to rise across utilities, consultancies, and EPCs, they're all competing for similar skill sets as projects ramp. - It's getting harder to move people internally or free up senior staff, given how stretched some projects already are. These challenges line up with what we’re seeing right across the power and renewables sector, plenty of work in the pipeline, but not enough experienced engineers to deliver it. If you're considering a move and want to know what the market is looking like - Or looking to complement your team with new talent, pop me a message. The Town of Smithfield has approved a $75,000 contract to start redesigning the Hospital Road electric delivery point to modernize the aging infrastructure. This project aligns with the town’s 2015 plan to upgrade the electric distribution system and prepare for Duke Energy’s phase-out of 115 kV transmission lines. The redesign aims to improve system redundancy and reduce outage impacts with a modern substation setup. - Contract awarded to Electrical Consulting Engineers Inc. for preliminary design and scoping - Project planning and regulatory approvals expected to take 2-5 years, with construction phased over time - Town exploring grants and federal funding to minimize borrowing for the multimillion-dollar project This initial step sets the foundation for a major infrastructure upgrade to enhance electric service reliability in Smithfield. Why Utility Infrastructure Planning Is the Backbone of Industrial Development Imagine investing millions in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility—only to discover that your power supply can’t handle the load. Sounds extreme? It happens more often than you think. When we talk about new industrial or manufacturing facilities, most people picture steel frames, production lines, and advanced automation. But before any of that takes shape, there’s an invisible foundation that determines whether a project succeeds or struggles: utility infrastructure planning. Utilities—power, water, gas, compressed air, telecommunications—are the lifelines of any industrial operation. Poor planning in this area can lead to costly delays, operational inefficiencies, and even long-term safety risks. Why is early utility planning critical? Avoid costly conflicts and delays: Misaligned utility corridors can halt construction and trigger expensive redesigns. Ensure scalability: Industrial facilities evolve. Planning for future loads and renewable integration (solar, EV charging, etc.) prevents expensive retrofits. Support sustainability goals: Efficient utility systems reduce energy consumption, minimize waste, and help meet environmental compliance standards. Enhance operational resilience: Robust Design with redundancy and intelligent monitoring ensures uptime and protects against disruptions. Best practices to consider: ✔ Conduct comprehensive site analysis and utility mapping before Design begins. ✔ Engage utility providers and stakeholders early to align on capacity and connection points. ✔ Design for flexibility—anticipate future technologies and expansion needs. In my experience, successful projects treat utility planning as a strategic priority rather than an afterthought. It’s the difference between a facility that operates and one that thrives for decades. Question for you: How does your team approach utility planning for industrial projects? #IndustrialDevelopment #UtilityPlanning #Manufacturing #EngineeringLeadership

🔄 The Value of Revision Features in ETAP In power system analysis, projects rarely stay static, designs evolve, operating conditions change, and multiple scenarios need to be tracked. ETAP’s revision features provide a powerful way to manage these changes. ETAP revisions grants you the ability to track changes made to particular components in a simple, clear and summarised manner, this helps you see immediately the effects of selecting a transformer from one manufacturer over another or even getting a picture of system parameters at different periods of time. Revisions are the backbone of change management in ETAP and is an indispensable tool for large and complex projects. I remain Okonta Paul, your all time favourite power systems engineer and part time superhero (again, don't blow by cover) and I am dedicated to giving you really great content😉 JP Smart Solutions Ltd #SmartSolutions #PowerSystems #Engineering #Power #Energy
