Reflections from JNUC 2025: Elevating Apple Management in Education Just returning from an inspiring week at JNUC 2025 in Denver with Hans Audun Jakobsen and Lasse Nilsen from Atea Norway as well as our great colleagues from Atea Denmark. We explored the latest in Apple device management, with a strong focus on education and student safety. My key takeaways: Declarative Device Management & Blueprints JAMF is moving to DDM, letting devices self-correct and stay compliant. Blueprints make managing settings, updates, and apps more intuitive and scalable across Mac and iOS. Seamless Identity Platform SSO and single sign-on extensions now enable students and teachers to access resources with a single login, reducing friction and saving classroom time. Automation & AI JAMF’s AI Assistant automates routine tasks, troubleshooting, and security analysis, freeing up time for higher-value work. Security & Privacy JAMF continues to prioritize student privacy, while new options like limited privacy mode in Safe Internet help schools meet legal requirements. APIs & Infrastructure as Code New platform APIs and Terraform provider enable better automation and integration, supporting large-scale, consistent deployments. It was great to re-connect with schools at ACLE (Australian Conference on Lutheran Education) in Brisbane last week! When people talk about “laptops for every child” they usually mean the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project — an ambitious, early-2000s effort to put rugged, low-cost laptops in the hands of kids in low-resource settings. But OLPC wasn’t the only approach — and comparing it to other global initiatives shows useful tradeoffs we still need to learn from. Quick comparison: OLPC — mission-driven, child-centred hardware + Sugar learning environment; emphasized ownership, offline learning and peer networks. Bold vision, but deployments bumped into logistics, teacher support and long-term maintenance challenges. Intel Classmate / government low-cost devices (e.g., Aakash) — vendor/government driven, often cheaper at scale but more top-down; success depended on procurement, curriculum alignment and after-sales support. Chromebooks & cloud-based rollouts — simple management, low friction for schools with connectivity; great for standardized deployments, but dependent on reliable internet and ecosystem lock-in. Raspberry Pi & maker-oriented projects — inexpensive, programmable, community-led; excellent for building local tech skills but less turnkey for classroom curriculum. Learning models (Hole-in-the-Wall, Khan Academy, community digital labs) — sometimes the focus isn’t the device but pedagogy: self-organised and scalable learning often beats hardware distribution alone. Key takeaways for future efforts: 1. Tech is only a tool — teacher training and curriculum matter most. 2. Plan for maintenance, replacement and total cost of ownership. 3. Local relevance and community ownership drive adoption. 4. Connectivity amplifies impact — but offline-first design remains critical where networks are unreliable. Thoughts?
