🚘 Pedestrian fatalities remain a sobering global reality. 🚶➡️ The World Health Organization reports that road traffic accidents claim approximately 1.19 million lives every year, and more than half of these deaths involve vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists (Road Traffic Injuries, 2023, WHO). With more electric vehicles filling Tennessee roads, new tools are helping emergency crews respond safely when accidents happen. ⚠️ Researchers at the Center for Transportation Research UT Knoxville developed an online portal that centralizes manufacturer info for nearly 500 EV models, helping first responders know exactly how to approach a crash scene. “Our goal is to have safe transportation no matter what, whether it's driving, being pedestrians, whoever is interacting with the transportation system,” said Kevin Heaslip, director of UT’s Center for Transportation Research. This new resource gives fire departments and first responders across the state one quick, reliable way to access life-saving information when it matters most.
