Adam makes great points here. I’m a big believer in: “History may not repeat, but I definitely recognize the beat!” Arcades used to have the latest and greatest technology. The home version would come out, and it was…limited by the constraints of the home systems. Then tech got equal, but arcades still had a window where they got a game first. Now, arcades are converting mobile and console to their platforms. People would only go to play something really unique, that was worth going to the arcade for. Sequels, and copycat games became less popular. Sound familiar? Theaters used to have all the advantages. Better sound, screens, experience, and a 6 month lead time before it came out in an edited (cropped to fit tv screens) home video version that left a lot to be desired. Home theater tech has at least caught up to theater tech in many ways. You can pick up a 62” gorgeous tv for ~$500. (That’s going to the movies about 5 times for a family of 4) Throw in the LED strip that syncs the lighting to the action on TV and you have a great experience with your family. Instead of 6 months, or the 2-3 months people were used to, you are seeing _19 days_ for tentpole films to be available at home. And plenty of films are coming same day. I’ve even seen streaming movies, releasing in theaters later, just to be eligible for awards. 🎶 Anyone else recognize that beat? 🎶 So how does the movie industry fix this before it’s too late? Look at what some of the arcade companies are doing. LAI Games , Raw Thrills , Triotech and more of the big players in the industry are all doing innovative games, giving people fun, over the top experiences they can’t get at home. Indies like BumbleBear Games, LLC and Devolver Digital (with Griffin Aerotech & Dodge Roll) are making games that are heavily retro influenced, and wildly popular. Killer Queen and Enter the Gungeon:House of the Gundead both have devoted fanbases. “KQ” has highly nationwide competitive tournaments, with people attending from all over the country. Local players are getting together weekly to practice, strategize, and most importantly? Have fun! There are all different sorts of games at the arcades. Familiar classics, reimagined and updated genres, innovative AR/VR, motion platforms, sports games, redemption and more. Everyone can find something they like. It’s a fun social experience. Some arcades have different themed nights for serious gamers, open play that gets a little crazy, and kids only time too. The film industry needs to remember it’s the entertainment industry. Let people have fun. Some want a silent, dark theater where everyone waits until the end to politely applaud. Others want that MST3K experience, where they heckle the screen, throw popcorn, take selfies, and have a blast with their friends. Parents of toddlers want to sleep for 90 minutes at a dull roar. Give people what they want.
I'd agree with this take. I see some similarities with the arcade business, in that when you remove exclusivity from the venue, consumers ask themselves "why should I go?" Granted, there are plenty of other factors that come in to play with why people visit a business, but for the small businesses near what used to be a magnet of the movie theater, this policy is hurting more than just those theaters (I've noticed how movie releases affect my bottom line ever since an IMAX theater opened up just a short walk away from my arcade). https://lnkd.in/gw42uZ6x
