AI may be reshaping the job market—but the education-to-AI pipeline is far from direct. Only 11% of qualifications held by AI engineers are actually AI-focused. Most studied adjacent fields like computer science or math, and many learned AI skills on the job. For educators, that signals a major opportunity: students don’t need to specialize in AI to succeed in it. They need flexibility—programs that blend technical literacy, problem-solving, and communication to help them pivot as new fields emerge. As AI transforms work, education must evolve from preparing students for specific jobs to preparing them for career adaptability. Faculty Focus just published my latest article: https://lnkd.in/eQqtF_kG I've already seen enormous changes in how I do my job, and how students do theirs. The future impacts of AI in education, business, and, of particular interest to students, the labor market are highly uncertain. In light of this uncertainty, what do we know for sure about what humans are, and will likely always be, better at than machines? How can we develop and leverage these Uniquely Human Capacities to widen our comparative advantage and improve employability? These are the questions I try to answer. Let me know what you think. EDIT: Reposting this in a format that permits forwarding. Thanks for the interest! #AIInEducation #UniquelyHuman #FutureOfWork #HumanSkills #MindfulLeadership #CareerResilience #HigherEducation #CUNY #CUNYBeyond

AI is no longer the future—it’s the present. As our children grow up with it, the question is how we prepare and guide them to thrive. So, how do we guide them? Check the prompt below for suggestions. Use this prompt: “Act as an education and technology advisor. Write a thoughtful response to a parent asking:"With the rise of AI, is it still a great idea for my child to pursue a degree in computer science or computer engineering?” Provide a balanced, insightful answer that: • Acknowledges how AI is changing the tech job landscape • Explains why foundational skills in CS and engineering are still relevant — or how they may evolve. • Addresses potential fears about automation or job saturation. Highlights how students can future-proof their degrees (e.g., by combining CS with AI ethics, data science, or entrepreneurship) The tone should be reassuring, informed, and forward-looking, offering practical advice and encouragement.” Get FREE prompt guide and samples here: https://lnkd.in/ggN-fJVg #ArtificialIntelligence #FutureOfWork #Leadership #AIParenting

💡 Can AI Replace College Education? A thought-provoking question our professor posed recently: “There is no point in having a college education in the Age of AI.” At first, I was quick to unpack this question, reflecting on why I entered college and what I’ve gained from the experience. While AI tools are undoubtedly revolutionizing how we learn and absorb information, the true value of a university education goes far beyond just knowledge acquisition. In my view, college isn’t just about what you learn — it’s about how you learn and the environment that fosters personal and professional growth. It’s about: 🔗 Building a network of peers and mentors 🧠 Developing soft skills like critical thinking, communication, and collaboration 🎓 Immersing yourself in the college life experience that shapes you into a more well-rounded individual Additionally, university encourages us to think deeply and critically about complex topics, teaching us how to approach uncertainty and evaluate information. That said, AI tools can be incredibly useful aids in the learning process, but relying solely on AI would mean trusting it without fully understanding its limitations. As many of us have seen, AI can sometimes offer incorrect or biased answers, which is a serious concern when we consider replacing the rich, human-driven experience of a college education. As the discussion evolved, our professor reminded us that our current understanding of AI is still quite superficial. The true potential of AI goes far beyond what we interact with today. He encouraged us to explore AI’s deeper possibilities, as it could radically transform not only education, but every industry. So, I ask: Can AI fully replace the college experience, or is there something irreplaceable about the human aspect of learning? What are your thoughts on this? Let’s continue the conversation! 👇 #AI #HigherEducation #Learning #CollegeExperience #ArtificialIntelligence #FutureOfEducation

🎓 AI in Education: Preparing Students for the Future, Not the Past AI is changing everything in higher education, but not in the way you think. Many institutions are looking at AI as something students use to cheat. We're looking at it as a tool they need to master because employers expect it. When our graduates enter the workforce, they'll be expected to use AI effectively and ethically. That's on us to teach them. We're embedding AI across all our courses because the technology is here to stay. Our job is to prepare students for the world they're entering, not the world we grew up in. The question isn't whether AI belongs in education. The question is how we use it to make our students more competitive in their careers. #AIinEducation #FutureOfLearning #HigherEducation #EdTech #ArtificialIntelligence #SkillsForTheFuture #EducationReform #DigitalTransformation #AIinClassroom #FutureReadyStudents

"Will AI make my degree irrelevant?" This is the question I've been hearing from students and parents across the globe. After four decades in education, I have some thoughts that might surprise you. While everyone's scrambling to learn coding and data analysis, there's one field that's quietly becoming the secret weapon in our AI-dominated world. It's not what you'd expect. In my latest blog, I dive into why liberal arts education isn't just surviving the AI revolution—it's becoming more essential than ever. From the STEAM revolution to the skills that keep humans irreplaceable, here's why the future might just belong to those who can bridge technology and humanity. Ready to challenge some assumptions about education and AI? . . 👇 Read the full piece below and let me know your thoughts in the comments. https://lnkd.in/gTJtv7hv . . . #LiberalArts #AIEducation #FutureOfWork #HigherEducation #CriticalThinking

I’ve been saying recently that the irony of our future is that it will be more human, and technology, especially AI, will play a part in how we get there. AI can’t connect the way people do. That’s why I found this piece by my colleague Brett W. so important: Future-Proof Students’ (and Our) Careers by Building Uniquely Human Capacities: https://lnkd.in/efuXZhEc Brett makes the case that what will truly prepare us, and our students, for the future of work is strengthening the capacities only humans can bring: compassion, ethics, intuition, storytelling, and connection. That resonates with me as an educator at BMCC, and a sister (she's quite a bit younger than I; I worry about her future and career.) This isn’t just a classroom issue. It’s a call for all of us to reflect on how we’re using AI as a tool while continuing to invest in what makes us distinctly human. What do you think? How are you working on your uniquely human capacities?

Students, here’s the truth: College in 2025 isn’t just about hard work—it’s about smart work. And AI has quietly become the ultimate study buddy. Think about it: Stuck on a tough math problem? AI breaks it down step by step. Research paper overload? AI summarizes 30 pages into 3 key takeaways. Can’t keep up with lectures? AI transcribes, organizes, and even highlights action points. Struggling with revision? AI generates flashcards and quizzes in seconds. I just went through a 100+ AI tools guide for students—organized across everything from study helpers and research tools to writing assistants, note-taking apps, and even career prep. Here’s my biggest takeaway: AI won’t do the learning for you. But it will give you back your time, reduce overwhelm, and make studying way more efficient. If you’re a student stepping into 2025, don’t just study harder—study smarter with AI.
