South Africa’s Trade Minister Parks Tau has expressed optimism that the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) will be renewed, even if only for a short term. The trade pact, which grants eligible African countries duty-free access to the U.S. market is set to expire on September 30, 2025. After meetings in Washington, Tau noted bipartisan support in Congress for an extension, which Reuters reported could last one to three years. At the same time, South Africa is seeking relief from recent U.S. tariffs. Tau raised objections with the U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer over a 30% tariff imposed in August, arguing it erodes the intended benefits of AGOA. “A renewal, even if short term, is essential to provide continuity for our exporters while broader trade discussions continue,” Tau said, according to Reuters. I’m not a fan of tariffs. Far from it. But to think that tariffs are the only barriers to trade is far too simplistic. Therefore, I want to repost this article where Fredrik N G Andersson is interviewed and explaining how Europe today faces significant non-monetary hurdles that severely impact trade (apologies, the article is in Swedish). What is he then highlighting? Two things: 1) Europe has numerous trade barriers against countries outside the EU. For example, import quotas that limit the amount of certain goods or policies that give domestic exporters unfair advantages, disrupting competition. 2) Even within the EU’s so-called internal market, true free trade is hindered by national legislation and regulations, making it difficult to trade on equal terms across borders. It’s clear that achieving a genuinely open market in Europe still requires significant work. What are your thoughts on this? Renew Europe welcomes the announcement of the EU–Indonesia trade agreement, a major step forward for Europe’s global trade agenda. The deal will reduce tariffs, strengthen supply chains and open new opportunities for European businesses, while securing access to critical raw materials. Renew Europe MEP Bart Groothuis, spokesperson on EU–Indonesia trade, reacted: "The new EU–Indonesia trade agreement is a significant breakthrough: it will greatly reduce tariffs, save European exporters around 600 million euros a year, and open a fast-growing market while securing access to critical raw materials like cobalt, copper and tin." MEP Marie-Pierre Vedrenne, Renew Europe coordinator for the Committee on International Trade, emphasised: "By concluding an agreement with Indonesia today, Europe is reaffirming its choice of cooperation over coercion, contrary to what some would like to impose. This strategic partnership, based on mutual commitments, illustrates once again that it is possible to combine influence and respect, despite the demands that this entails."
