Every great innovation starts with a test — and this one has been especially exciting. Over the past months, we’ve been testing Kia’s first battery passport, and it’s been a truly insightful journey. For this pilot, a Kia EV3 equipped with a @Dukosi battery cell monitoring system travelled all the way from Korea to Europe — carrying with it not just a battery, but a new way of thinking about transparency and sustainability. The vehicle monitors and transmits live data from each individual cell, all uploaded to a digital battery passport. Our current prototype already includes more than 100 data attributes, enabling real-time state-of-health tracking, repair diagnostics, and end-to-end traceability across the full battery lifecycle. This first phase of research has given our team at Kia valuable insights into how battery passports can reshape the future of electric mobility. China’s Leapmotor brings latest extended-range EV Leapmotor, a Chinese company backed by Stellantis, has introduced its C10 extended-range electric vehicle this month, highlighting confidence in South Africa’s potential as an electric vehicle hub. Additional models are expected to be launched in 2026. South Africa is Leapmotor’s third market in Africa. The company is also in Morocco and Mauritius. The C10 joins the BMW i3 Rex, Rox 01 and Huawei Avatr 11 Ultra Extended-Range as some of the major extended-range EVs being sold in Africa. The BMW 13 is one of the most sold EVs in South Africa. Kia runs cell-level battery passport trial in Europe Kia Europe is publicly testing a battery passport at the cell level for the first time as part of preliminary research.
