This week Google’s AI Mode has officially gone live in Australia - and it’s changing how we search, evaluate, and trust information online. After testing it myself, I share the same opinion as many - this isn't about replacing SEO, it’s about refining it. As AI reshapes both search behaviour and how search results appear, the fundamentals remain the same - just more important than ever: • Trust & authority - Google continues to prioritise credible, transparent sources. • Structured, user-first content - clear headings, schema, and formatting help AI understand your expertise. • Intent over keywords - content that answers real questions in natural, conversational ways will rise to the top. My take? AI Mode isn’t the end of SEO - it’s the next chapter. The brands that win will be those that communicate clearly, credibly, and contextually - for both humans and algorithms. Backlinks still matter in AI search and Kevin Indig’s latest study proves just that: He analyzed 1,000+ domains using Semrush’s AI SEO toolkit to see how backlinks correlate with AI mentions. Here’s what stood out: 🚀 Authority still matters for AI mention, but it doesn’t paint the full picture. 🚀 Quality > volume. 🚀 Nofollow links carry the same impact as regular links. 🚀 Image-based backlinks sometimes perform even better. The only links worth getting anymore? Real backlinks from real domains you know, recognize, and trust, with high authority scores, high traffic, and high recall in LLMs. Anything less and you’re flushing money down the drain. Will AI replace SEO??? AI, SEO, and the Future of Search As language models evolve, it’s clear that they’re exceptionally suited for certain tasks, and I’m fully prepared to embrace that change. In fact, I welcome a bit of disruption to Google’s long-standing monopoly. Multiple strong search engines would actually be great for the SEO industry — more diversity, more opportunities, and smarter competition. That said, Google has been preparing for this shift for years. Their content guidelines are built around one core principle: answering human questions. And while AI can produce information, it still struggles to truly understand user intent and craft content that resonates on a human level. That’s exactly why human SEOs don’t have much to worry about — at least not in the short to mid-term. Strategy, empathy, and understanding real audience behavior can’t be automated. And honestly, if AI can take some of the repetitive, low-value writing tasks off our plate… I’m all for it. Maybe it’s time clients let the machines handle the pointless stuff 😉
