Here's why this deserves to win. Imagine your 5-year-old child is in the pediatric ICU after a major heart surgery. The doctors and nurses need to monitor her recovery very closely. Her blood pressure is unstable, and they need to know if her heart is pumping enough blood to her brain and other vital organs. • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝘆 (𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗔𝗰𝗤𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻): To get an accurate measurement, a doctor would have to perform an 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 procedure. This involves inserting a long, thin tube called a catheter into a large vein in the child's neck or groin and threading it all the way into or near the heart. This procedure is risky (it can cause infections or blood clots), painful for the child, and only provides a snapshot of information at that one moment in time.    • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗪𝗮𝘆 (𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗰𝗤𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻): Instead of inserting a catheter, a nurse would simply place a small, 𝗻𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 sensor on the child's chest. This sensor uses ultrasound (safe sound waves) and other technology to measure the cardiac output from 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦 the body. The device measures the blood flow 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗹𝘆, sending real-time data to a monitor at the child's bedside. With AcQumen's device, the child's medical team can now see, minute-by-minute, how her heart is doing. If they give her a medication to help her heart pump stronger, they can see an immediate result on the screen. What a huge step forward for healthcare. And one more data point proving that Minnesota is the true Silicon Valley of cardiovascular.
