Maersk’s $400M LNG Bet: Hedging Methanol-First Strategy for 2028 to 2030 Maersk was the methanol trailblazer. Now it’s betting $400M on 20 LNG dual-fuel newbuilds. Even pioneers diversify when methanol supply lags and carbon costs rise. 20 LNG dual-fuel container ships, deliveries 2028 to 2030. Separate from its 2025 retrofit program for 200 chartered vessels to cut slot costs (per-container shipping cost). Orderbook: ~500 LNG-capable ships today (Clarksons) → +4% with this order. Potential demand: 1.5 to 2 Mtpa LNG by 2030 (~10% of 2024’s 15 Mtpa, DNV). Paradox: LNG cuts CO₂ 19 to 25% vs fuel oil (ICCT). Methanol cuts 65 to 95% but supply is <1 Mt vs 20 Mt projected by 2030 (DNV). Scaling methanol needs $50 to 70B and major projects (Ørsted FlagshipONE, OCI, Proman), most still pre-FID. Fiscal anchor: Dual-fuel engines add $15 to 20M per ship ($300 to 400M total). Efficiency savings of $100/TEU/year on 12,000 TEU ships imply 5 to 7 years payback. Policy anchor: EU ETS covers 40% of shipping in 2026 and 100% in 2027. At €85/t CO₂, LNG saves €15 to 20/t. At €150/t in 2030, savings drop to €8 to 12/t. Blind Spots Methane slip: can erase 10 to 20% of CO₂ savings. Methane’s 80× warming factor (20 years) risks penalties. LNG price volatility: $250/t premium vs HFO in 2025 (S&P). Oversupply from US and Qatar may ease this post-2030. Tech obsolescence: ammonia engines and advanced fuel cells could shorten LNG’s window. Competition CMA CGM leads with 44 LNG ships (Clarksons). MSC stays flexible with ~100 future-fuel-ready vessels. Maersk’s LNG move diversifies its methanol-first posture. Takeaway LNG is the 2028 to 2035 bridge. Methanol and ammonia are the long-term plays. Diversification, not single bets, drives strategy. Maersk added $400M LNG CAPEX to its $10B alternative-fuel fleet.
