Gates Foundation grants $1.5M for TB diagnostic test using Monod Bio's AI-based protein design

Thrilled to share news of a $1.5M grant from the Gates Foundation to support Monod’s commitment to pioneer a new class of de novo AI-designed protein binders to address critical gaps in the detection of tuberculosis in low-resource settings This project represents a major step forward in the application of de novo protein design to real-world global health challenges.

Excited for Monod on this new grant. Screening tools for TB are urgently needed, and developing them has proven to be a tough challenge. Many smart people and well-resourced programs have tried, but the right balance of performance, cost, and usability has remained out of reach. Monod’s computational protein design platform enables next-generation binding reagents with improved affinity, epitope breadth, and molecular selectivity. This technology holds real promise for delivering the low-cost diagnostic needed to address the world’s leading causes of infectious disease mortality.

Using synchrotrons, including SLAC's SSRL, researchers found a promising new candidate compound for drug therapies against antibiotic resistant bacteria. Bacterial infections are treatable with antibiotics. But bacteria have proven a wily adversary, adapting to resist treatments. Bright X-rays from our SSRL synchrotron offer glimpses into the molecular structures & interactions of these bacteria and potential drug compounds. By focusing on inhibiting a protein that plays a key role in resistance, researchers have found a potential compound for restoring the efficacy of a current class of antibiotics known as streptogramins.
