When Connectivity Breaks, Lives Break Too We love to boast about India’s highways. The long stretches of asphalt connecting big cities, the expressways with grand names and bigger budgets. But the truth is, the real test of a nation’s infrastructure is not in how fast you can drive between Delhi and Agra. It is in whether an ambulance can reach a tribal woman in labour before it’s too late, or whether a motorist in the city can make it home without being flung off balance by a pothole. This isn’t just a rural versus urban story. The poorest of the poor and the richest of the rich both pay the price of broken connectivity. For one, it’s a matter of life and death when a bad road denies access to medical care. For the other, it’s high-end cars slammed into craters on city roads, sometimes fatally. At both ends of the spectrum, lives are being lost. The numbers tell their own story. India saw over 4.8 lakh road accidents in 2023, killing more than 1.72 lakh people. Highways, which make up just 5 percent of the road network, account for almost 60 percent of road deaths. Villages without all-weather connectivity remain cut off from the basics of health and safety. Cities pour crores into road repairs, only for the monsoon to turn them into obstacle courses again. It doesn’t matter where you stand in society, the ground under your feet, or under your wheels, is equally fragile. And here’s the irony. We are among the highest taxed citizens in the world when you add up GST, cess, income tax, road tax, fuel tax. Every year, the government announces record spending on infrastructure. Yet ambulances are still delayed on muddy tracks, two-wheelers skid on loose gravel, and newly laid roads develop cracks before the paint even dries. If this is what we get after paying so much, is it really worth it? It’s not enough to build flashy highways that run between cities. What use is it if within towns, within wards, within narrow streets, the roads themselves are liabilities? Infrastructure means nothing if last-mile access fails. A government can approve projects worth crores, but unless municipal agencies maintain, monitor, and repair local roads, the gains won’t touch real lives. Imagine what India could be with roads that worked - not just highways that shine on brochures, but the everyday roads that connect homes to hospitals, farms to markets, children to schools. Imagine a country where your wealth or poverty didn’t determine whether a broken road could cut your life short. That isn’t a utopian dream. It’s a question of priorities, planning, and accountability. We deserve better. Not just highways to showcase, but roads that actually serve. Until then, connectivity will remain a cruel divider, when it should be the most basic equaliser. Because when connectivity fails us close to home, no highway in the world will ever be enough. #RoadsForAll #Connectivity #RuralIndia #UrbanInfrastructure #RoadSafety #InfrastructureJustice #IndiaNeedsBetterRoads
This is ‘Smart City Patna’. A pothole so big that a Mahindra Scorpio SUV car fell into it. Five people were reportedly in the car when it fell into the deep waterlogged pothole. And this happened right outside the Patna junction, according to ANI. The car’s owner said “This is a conspiracy to defame the government during the election period. This is all BUIDCO’s (Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation) fault. They created a pothole on the road and left it for 20 days. It’s the rainy season. 5 people fell into it. If someone had lost their life, then who would take responsibility?" “There was no barricade. After my car fell, another person on a bike also fell into the same ditch. Locals say someone or the other falls in this pothole every day”, the owner added. Our cities are given flashy names by ministers to make headlines, but it takes just one monsoon to expose their reality. Just one monsoon to show taxpayers where their money is going. #News #Bihar #Patna #Smart #Scorpio

Jalandhar Tribune 22-9-2025 Open House: What steps should be taken to improve road safety? Reform licensing rules, ensure CCTV vigil & set speed limits Strict enforcement of speed limits The maxim “Speed thrills but kills” is more relevant today than ever before. Automobile manufacturers are producing cars capable of running at a minimum of 160 km per hour or more, yet speed limits are prescribed only for national highways. Speed breakers are vanishing and when a driver is under the influence of liquor or intoxicants, the risk of overspeeding multiplies. People are always in a hurry: if traffic police personnel are present at signals, rules are followed; but in their absence, violations become rampant. This raises the question—if an untoward incident occurs, who is to be blamed? Another worrying trend is among NRIs returning from abroad, who habitually follow international speed patterns. When they attempt to drive on Indian roads in the same manner, it creates a serious threat of accidents. Listening to mobile phones while driving is another growing hazard. Big cars are squeezing the already declining width of roads, while shopkeepers extend displays into the streets, forcing buyers to stop vehicles. When this occurs on opposite sides of a road, traffic jams become inevitable. The problem is further aggravated by people refusing to follow one-way systems. Administrations must act strictly, as cars do not have governors installed to restrict speed within city limits and on national highways. While routine speed checks and challans are conducted, enforcement inside city areas must also be tightened. Clearly displayed speed limit boards are essential and anyone violating these limits should be immediately challaned. Without firm enforcement, the culture of rash driving will only persist, endangering countless lives. Think about the cartons from your morning juice or milk. Where do they end up? Most of the time, in the dustbin, heading straight to a landfill. What if they could become a chair, a table, or even a birdhouse instead? The Kabadiwala, in collaboration with Tetra Pak India is making this possible by collecting and recycling used beverage cartons. If you’re in Bhopal, Lucknow, Raipur, Nagpur, or Gorakhpur, hand over your used cartons while selling kabad through #TheKabadiwalaApp and give them a second life. Small changes at home can create a big impact on our city. #SustainableLiving #CircularEconomy #TheKabadiwala #TetraPakIndia #RecycleResponsibly
