Continuing on the theme of good and effective communication, and things I have wondered about, I saw this figure from the Office for National Statistics in a post on this platform recently. I was impressed with this graphical presentation of the change population estimates, ignoring the curiosity of a 297-person 'other changes' to a number that is at a magnitude of tens of millions and underpinned by less-than-perfect counting method. It presents well the magnitude and relative impact of changes, I think. I then wondered: 💭 Would this be a better way to summarise the headline findings of an economic appraisal of a proposed transport scheme? Imagine, base costs to the left of zero can grow with user and non-user benefits, but then are pared back again by operating, maintenance and renewal costs, and changes in tax revenues. Or Wider Economic Impacts reduced by monetised environmental and social impacts. There are something like 99 other problems before the format of the end summary, perhaps, but the story and the accessibility of this to a non-technical audience matters, too. The biggest communication gap I see between tech professionals and clients? Explaining solutions too technically — and losing clarity in the process. Your client doesn’t need the algorithm. They need the outcome. Here’s how to bridge that gap in Business English: 1. Start with impact, not process Instead of: “We’re implementing an API to improve data sync.” Say: “We’re making your systems communicate faster and more reliably.” 2. Use client language, not team language Instead of: “The deployment failed due to a configuration mismatch.” Say: “The update didn’t go live as planned — we’re resolving a setup issue.” 3. Summarize clearly after every meeting End with: “Here’s what we agreed on…” “Next steps are…” “We’ll update you by…” It’s not just English — it’s client confidence. Language Traps 45+ Job Seekers Fall Into — and Better Words to Use Words carry weight — especially on a résumé. Some instantly signal energy ↳ Calling yourself “seasoned” You mean “experienced.” They read “older.” ➡️ Instead: Use “strategic,” “accomplished,” or “recognized for driving results.” ↳ Using dated corporate jargon (“results-oriented,” “team player,” “responsible for”) These scream résumé template circa 1998. ➡️ Instead: Lead with fresh verbs: led, built, drove, delivered, transformed. ↳ Saying “Proficient in Microsoft Office” That’s expected baseline knowledge — not a differentiator. ➡️ Instead: Get specific: Excel data modeling, workflow automation, digital collaboration tools. ↳ Using overly formal language (“utilized,” “leveraged synergies”) Stiff and outdated. ➡️ Instead: Clear, modern phrasing: used, partnered, collaborated across teams. If we look across our public services in the UK, there is evidence that we been catastrophic failures at making knowledge contagious. We have failed to learn the lessons of the past, both good and bad. We not only fail to connect across sectors , we often simply do not know each other exist. Despite unprecedented access to data and technology the number one self stated problem in organisations is always and only ever one thing: communication. The system we need to rebuild must be founded on principles of collective intelligence and self organisation. Knowledge IS contagious if the system supports it. When I caught myself managing my calendar, email, tasks and notes via chat messages, then I realized how addictive is to have an extremely helpful and almost almighty personal AI-sistant. Enter "Beryl 2.0". She can: 1. Check, create, and edit calendar appointments. 2. Check email, create drafts for approval. 3. Compose and directly send emails. 4. Manage tasks (not only in Google Tasks). 5. Manage a Notion notebook (and more). 6. Do a research and send the report via email. The fastest way to communicate with Beryl is Telegram, but - if needed - she can be reached via email or even directly assigned a task in Notion, Airtable or another tasks management software. She can guard and classify your email, so that only the important messages can appear on your radar. She can protect your time and suggest proper time slots...
