The National Energy System Operator has outlined an updated timeline for connections reform. At National Grid we’ve been getting ready to play our part in the next steps of the process Here’s what you need to know: - At NGET, we’re committed to connecting energy projects to the grid in a timely way, and we’re taking action, working alongside NESO and distribution network operators (DNOs) to deliver the connections reform process - Once we receive the revised connections queue from NESO, we will carry out the restudy of the network, update and return offers to NESO, who will issue updated contracts to customers. You can see the full timeline on NESO’s website. - We’ve held regional workshops with our DNO partners, 28 to- date, to align on data requirements and the expected engineering works that will enable distribution connections. We’ve also held our first regional workshops focussed on substation engineering solutions for the anticipated contracted pipeline. These have brought together Power System Engineers, Connection Engineers and other key stakeholders to refine processes, manage resources and contribute towards effective management of the process at individual sites. - Everyone at NGET is committed to making the connections journey as clear and seamless as possible for our customers. Finally I would like to thank our customers for their collaboration and efforts through connections reform so far, we are excited to continue to work closely with you in the weeks and months ahead.

Connections reform is a once in a generation opportunity to modernise Great Britain’s energy grid, creating a fairer, more efficient system that boosts economic growth, strengthens energy security, and accelerates our transition to clean energy. While essential to achieving these goals, we recognise the reform brings major changes for our customers. Matthew Magill, Director of Engineering & Customer Solutions Transformation, outlines the challenges of the current oversubscribed queue, why reform is vital, and what it means for the thousands of projects seeking to connect, of which only around one third are expected to receive a firm offer. 2wIf a substation needs to be completely upgraded and won’t be ready until 2030-2031 at the earliest, can energy companies still get planning permission to build solar farms now or do they have to wait until the new substation is up and running?
