Industry news: 🚨 UCLA was chosen by Sandy Gooch to house The Sandy Gooch Papers, which document the founding and growth of Mrs. Gooch's Natural Food Markets and the founder's life work. Mrs. Gooch transformed the way many Americans prepare, eat and shop for food, asking, "Is it Goochable?" Sources at the University of California Los Angeles say The Sandy Gooch Papers will be available to researchers early next year. A companion lecture series—the Sandy Gooch and Harry Lederman Endowed Lecture Series—will be announced in the coming months. w/ Mary Karyda, Ph.D. thrilled that our new article on Digesting Data is out, in She Ji: The Journal of Design, Economics, and Innovation. Wilde, D.,* & Karyda, M.* (2025) Bridging Data, Lived Experiences, and Policy through Food and Eating: Reconfiguring the Policy Co-creation Landscape for More Just Transitions. She Ji: The Journal of Design, Economics, and Innovation 11, no. 3 (2025): 313–344. *joint first authorship available at : https://lnkd.in/d7Dg8SXR The article reflects on a workshop that brought together fishers, public authorities, chefs, and researchers to rethink the role of lived experience in the policy process. Using food as both data and method, it created space for deep listening among stakeholders who have spent decades trying to communicate and understand the challenges faced by fishers. As a regional public authority said after the first half-day: “I’ve learned more in these four hours than I have in the last ten years” we hope you enjoy!

The University of California, Davis has continued to research how to grow #almonds, working with varieties best suited for California and mitigating disease and pests, including the carpophilus beetle, "a threat around which UC Cooperative Extension has organized trainings and education up and down the state."
Next time you reach for a bottle of California Chardonnay or a bag of cuties, think of the University of California 🍊 Across university farms, labs and UCANR locations, and in partnership with growers and ranchers around the state, research from UC is at the root of the state and nation’s abundance. https://t.co/287uZgeerR

Some folks at Stanford just built a framework to understand and adapt research papers quickly, and to that end, released a research paper. What in the Nolan's inception is going on? Here's the complete paper. It's a pretty decent read. https://lnkd.in/dcVYY7HC

New Publication! The Research Handbook on End of Life Care and Society edited by David Clark and Annemarie Samuels is now available and has full open access! 'Its aim is to provide a wide-ranging, in-depth, and accessible overview of research on end of life care in the societal context. In this respect it differs from most other major collections and textbooks in the field, which, with a few exceptions, are largely clinical in orientation. The Handbook highlights social science perspectives on end of life care, providing an overview of theories, methods, and substantive themes. These are hugely important perspectives in a world where how and where we die are becoming increasingly challenging issues, often surrounded by contestation and debate'. If AI existed during my formative years, the use of this helpful “tool” to compile “my” original thoughts, test results and conclusions might have been considered a form of “plagiarism”. If it is determined not to be the case, maybe AI should at least receive partial credit as a co-author???
I like to think of myself as someone who champions change and progress in our field. But maybe this is where my age betrays me, because every time I see declarations like this popping up in published journal articles, I can’t help but shudder. Perhaps my next manuscript will need to state: ‘This manuscript was produced entirely by humans (with only moderate caffeine assistance)'! 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇

Excited to see new research underway on bulb onions! Having been involved in multiple onion recalls over the years, I’ve seen firsthand how many questions come up afterward, about contamination sources, industry practices, and what can be done to prevent future issues. This study is taking a closer look not only at bulb onion safety, but also at production and handling practices for short- and intermediate-day varieties. These are critical areas that could provide insights the industry has been missing. I’m looking forward to seeing how this research helps answer the questions I so often hear after each recall, while strengthening food safety across the supply chain. 👏 Kudos to the team driving this important work — your efforts are vital for building both grower confidence and consumer trust Center for Produce Safety & Abigail Snyder, Cornell University

We just published a new paper on self-reinforcing cascades in Physical Review Letters, and we made an interactive story to go with it! Play with an interactive story (made by Jonathan St-Onge) here: https://lnkd.in/eRAnfPBt The research looks at how information cascades (like viral jokes or stories) can spread widely without needing fine-tuning or self-organization at the critical point. This allows cascades to improve in quality and jump over gaps or dead-ends. If you want the full details, the paper is here: https://lnkd.in/e2rTGWb9 This work is in collaboration with folks at the Vermont Complex Systems Institute, Vermont EPSCoR, Santa Fe Institute, and University of Limerick
