‘This has been one of the most valuable experiences of my medical training, and one I will carry with me throughout my career as a doctor.’ Meet Maxine, a fifth-year medical student who recently completed her neurosurgery elective at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. Training under the neurosurgery teams, Maxine has scrubbed in on cranial and spinal operations, and observed or assisted in more than 20 cases – including deep brain stimulation, lumbar decompressions and spinal fusions. ‘I was so fortunate to learn from such an outstanding team of neurosurgeons.
