Phoebe Philo has redefined contemporary chic by building an independent label rooted in authenticity, cultural authorship and timeless design. Her brand rejects fast fashion’s ephemerality — offering considered craftsmanship and empowering self-expression aimed at a mature audience seeking quality design and longevity. In my latest case study for Canvas8, I explore how Philo is: - Reframing independence as influence - Using cultural authorship to build trust - Challenging the industry to prioritise longevity over ephemerality With 56% of Britons wanting transparency in how products are made, and 80% of Gen Z saying they feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of brands, Philo’s blueprint shows that clarity and consistency cut through. Did the London shows feel different this season? There was a whiff of change in the air as the British Fashion Council held its first fashion week under new CEO Laura Weir, who has eliminated the fees that designers had to pay to show on the official schedule and increased funding to bring in international press. What was most palpable was a kind of collective will among industry insiders to cheer London on as it attempts to open a new chapter for its fashion week despite the market challenges facing the emerging designers who are its raison d’etre. WNBA star Angel Reese's debut on the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show runway represents a significant intersection of sports and fashion. While this milestone celebrates diversity and challenges traditional beauty standards, it also raises questions about the commercialization of athletes and their identities. Can the glamour of high fashion truly embrace the authenticity of sports, or will it dilute the powerful narratives athletes like Reese embody? As we witness this evolving landscape, we must consider what it means for both industries moving forward. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eHvycS7Z

Dressing for the “female gaze” is a concept that has gained ground in fashion over the past decade, with the term — which first emerged in response to a 1975 essay by the British film theorist Laura Mulvey, who wrote about the objectification of women from a male perspective in film — being more prevalent, historically, within the context of the arts. The need for a female perspective has arguably never been greater — yet, in luxury fashion, it is particularly lacking. The fact that top executive jobs in the industry are primarily held by men is an open secret, and, these days, the women designers appointed to lead high-end brands are so few that you can count them on one hand. And this weekend, their pairing proved to be a virtue, as Trotter presented her first collection for the Italian label during Milan Fashion Week at its usual venue in the Piazzale Lodi area.
