🏃♀️ From Fatigue to Function: Redefining Rural Cancer Care Through Exercise Oncology 🌾 ⸻ There’s a quiet revolution happening in oncology—and it’s not coming from a new drug or device. It’s coming from a movement. Drs. Joanna Metzner-Sadurski and Ruiling Yuan’s recent publication, “From Fatigue to Function: Redefining Rural Cancer Care Through Exercise Oncology,” reframes one of the most overlooked aspects of survivorship: the power of movement as medicine. For decades, cancer care has been defined by tumor response rates, survival curves, and remission milestones. But what happens after remission—when fatigue, muscle loss, neuropathy, and emotional isolation take hold? This article challenges that traditional narrative. Its brilliance lies in treating exercise not as a wellness trend but as a clinical intervention—one that mitigates toxicity, restores endurance, and rewires resilience. Even more transformative is its focus on rural oncology, where patients face barriers of geography, income, and access. Here, exercise oncology becomes not just rehabilitative, but revolutionary: scalable, low-cost, and human-centered. What hasn’t yet been fully redefined is the system around it—billing codes, electronic health record integration, and structured oncology training in exercise physiology. Yet this paper is a blueprint for what’s next: embedding movement prescriptions into cancer pathways just as naturally as chemotherapy orders. At the heart of this transformation are community oncologists—the true frontline leaders of American cancer care. They are the ones seeing the fatigue, hearing the breathlessness, and understanding the humanity behind every data point. They are not just treating cancer; they are restoring function. As precision medicine advances, the next frontier is precision recovery. And it begins not in a lab, but in a small-town clinic, a local gym, or a patient’s living room—where the journey from fatigue to function is not just possible, but profoundly healing. ⸻ #Oncology #CancerCare #ExerciseOncology #RuralHealth #MedicalInnovation #Survivorship #CommunityOncology #PrecisionMedicine

🌄 Bridging Gaps in Rural Cancer Care At Barrett Hospital & HealthCare, we believe geography should never determine access to quality care. Our collaboration with the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) through the Alliance for Equity in Cancer Care is helping make that belief a reality, right here in Southwest Montana. While we may not move mountains, together we’re helping close the divide in cancer care by empowering local providers, strengthening community partnerships, and ensuring that patients can receive the high-quality oncology services they deserve, close to home. Read more about this inspiring work and the model it provides for rural healthcare transformation in the latest issue of the Journal of Oncology Navigation & Survivorship (JONS). 🔗 https://bit.ly/4nfX9RW #CancerCare #HealthEquity #Oncology #RuralHealthcare #BarrettHospital #MontanaHealthcare
