Surgery with an Intramedullary Lengthening Nail: What to Expect If your child has a leg length discrepancy (LLD) of more than 2cm, one possible treatment option is bone lengthening surgery using an internal device like the Orthofix Fitbone™ Intramedullary Lengthening Nail. How it works: • The surgeon performs an osteotomy (cutting the bone). • The bone ends are gradually pulled apart, and new bone grows in the gap, a process called distraction osteogenesis. • The motorized IM nail helps separate the bone ends slowly, allowing for safe bone growth. What to expect post-surgery: • After surgery, there’s a 1-week recovery period before starting the lengthening phase. • Lengthening occurs at a controlled rate, with physical therapy to help maintain joint movement. • Once the desired length is reached, the consolidation phase begins, and the IM nail is removed about a year later.
