Startup 404, Chapter 2 – The Ecosystem Earlier in my career, I was told "ecosystem" has a bad connotation. In the animal kingdom, it means “big fish eat small fish”. In the world of capitalism, it simply means “winner takes all”. While that is not necessarily wrong, it reflects a narrow definition of ecosystem. So how about the “Startup Ecosystem”? Over the years, there are many commentaries and reports on Singapore startup ecosystem – mostly positive, some negative. Some feel our ecosystem is artificial and has only taken off because of government intervention. Well, for those who may not be aware, the grandfather of startup ecosystem, Silicon Valley, also benefitted largely from military and research funding/ projects from the U.S. government, who played a crucial role in the birth and foundations of Silicon Valley. I digressed but for the record, ecosystems evolved differently. Singapore has come a long way since we had the world-first Minister in-charge of Entrepreneurship back in 2003. The evolution of our ecosystem would not be possible without the collaboration between partners and government agencies. For the OGs amongst us, we know the contributions of the pioneers - NUS Enterprise (especially Lily Chan and Poh-Kam Wong), corporations like Singtel Innov8, and government-backed funds, incubators & accelerators, etc. - building our ecosystem alongside then-MDA, then-IDA, JTC, NRF and then-SPRING. Singapore startup ecosystem is not the animal kingdom or pure capitalism. Neither are we perfect. While the collaboration between partners and government has elevated our ecosystem and witnessed the birth of iconic startup unicorns over the past 20 years, it is not sufficient. We need a “self-sustaining ecosystem”. Government agencies will continue to be key champion and enabler for startup development. Ecosystem partners will play a crucial role in growing promising startups. BUT what is equally important is for the earlier generation of founders to take on a greater role in supporting the current and future generations of entrepreneurs. Their experience, expertise, network, and hopefully financial support will be extremely beneficial. This is the closed-loop ecosystem we observe in more matured ecosystems like the Silicon Valley, which resulted in a closely knitted ground-up community that reinforces startup development. It’s time for us to build this community, beyond the definition of ecosystem. ACE.SG (Action Community for Entrepreneurship) is working on this. We hope to have more partners joining us on this mission.
We've come a long way in a short time, but as they say: "what got us here, isn't what will get us there... ". The eco-system's got to evolve to grow organically - and I'm sure it will - already see parts of the wider system doing so
Patrick Lim would love to work with your team in the agrifoodtech space! Count us as a possible ecosystem partner :) Perhaps we could organize an event that involves a 5km 🏃♂️➡️ ? (I do miss those sessions!)
Patrick Lim It is good for people to remember the roots of entrepreneurship. It is a pity that people don’t talk about NRF, Block 71 and 79, th first few matching funds started by Seeds Capital Spring etc. Block 71 was fun. Living and working with dozens of young people with dreams. Remember names like Meng Weng Wong James Chan Hugh MASON all setting up the incubators around 2013. And the likes of Hian Goh setting up shop there. We need our own HP Garage stories. Glad you and ACE.SG (Action Community for Entrepreneurship) building the ecosystem again
Happy to be part of this vibrant ecosystem! :) Full steam ahead!
cool
