🔓 It’s International Open Access Week! October 20-26, 2025 🌐This year’s theme, “Who Owns the Knowledge?” invites us to reflect on how knowledge is created, shared and used to ensure that publicly funded research remains accessible to all. Open access is not just about publications or data; it’s also about open access to research infrastructures. Organisations like #EuroBioImaging make advanced imaging technologies, expertise and data services available to researchers across disciplines and borders, enabling equitable access to cutting-edge science and technology. At #EuroBioImaging, we believe imaging data is a cornerstone of open science, and we are working with our community to make imaging data FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) and open to everyone. 📽️ To celebrate #OAweek explore our Imaging Data Community Days 2025 playlist on YouTube 👉 https://lnkd.in/edyeAQ6P There you will find inspiring talks and discussions from imaging experts, data scientists and facility managers on building a culture of open access to imaging data. Last week I had the honor of taking part in a panel discussion during the ESS / MAX IV / SciLifeLab Summit in Lund, which gathered around one of the most crucial questions facing modern science: how do we manage, preserve, and make accessible the deluge of data generated at large-scale research facilities? The Summit was held at The Loop in Science Village, Lund and was livestreamed for broader participation (https://lnkd.in/dR9q2mFh). I was part of the panel on “Written Documentation and Data Storage in a Digitized Research Environment” alongside Karin von Wachenfeldt (Truly Labs / Truly Translational), moderated by the amazing Maria Borelius. We explored how institutions like DTU Biosustain can navigate the tension between legacy documentation practices and fully digital storage, while safeguarding transparency, reproducibility, and long-term access. Some reflections I took away (and shared): - Documentation and data are two sides of the same coin; you can’t responsibly store data without clear, contextual records. - Policies need to outlive platforms: retention schedules, format planning, open standards, and persistent identifiers are essential. - Digital systems bring efficiencies but also risks (e.g. obsolescence, security). Therefore, redundancy, audits, and fallback strategies must be baked in. - To avoid metadata becoming a burden, the best systems seamlessly integrate documentation into researchers’ daily workflows. - In high-stakes science, documentation is not optional; it’s rather the backbone that enables reproducibility, auditability, and trust. Beyond our panel, the Summit featured rich discussions on data strategies, AI/ML for science, bottlenecks in large-scale data infrastructure, and how major facilities (ESS, MAX IV, SciLifeLab) can collaborate to turn petabytes of data into scientific breakthroughs. Thanks to the organizers (Tutti Johansson Falk for the invitation) and everyone who contributed to what was a stimulating and forward-looking day. I’m energized by the ideas exchanged, the challenges identified, and the opportunities ahead. PS: You can watch my 'piece' after 5:23:00 (but I highly recommend listening to all the talks and panel discussions as they were very inspiring) 🙂 #DataManagement #OpenScience #Reproducibility #ResearchInfrastructure #Documentation #DigitalTransformation #ESS #MAXIV #SciLifeLab #SciencePolicy
