Is EVA recyclable? I had this question last week from someone who told me EVA is sustainable. How are your slides made? Poof! And there are shoes! EVA is primarily composed of polyethylene vinyl acetate, or PEVA. This material, sometimes just called EVA, belongs to a class of compounds called polymers — large molecules, which are made of smaller, repeating molecules joined together. Its chemical components come from petroleum, yes, fossil fuels. Is it recyclable though? Well, yes and no. Whether or not EVA is recyclable just depends on the type of EVA that you have. Number 7 plastics are usually more difficult to recycle or require a specialized recycling process.  Most recycling facilities are not equipped to handle it. So very little EVA is recycled. Just because something can be recycled doesn't mean it is being recycled. I learned this from @CPSC This means that EVA may not be accepted in all areas or be able to be recycled at a normal recycling facility. Even if it is recyclable, it is still very hard to do so. It splits the crowd and sparks debate. Skepticism causes engagement, which is rewarded with more traffic. The flywheel rolls. That comment got 650 likes and sub-comments, and there are more like it. One of our main sustainability goals is reducing the environmental impact of our operations. When wooden pallets were in short demand after the pandemic, we saw this as an opportunity to begin making the switch to reusable pallets and partnered with Tosca, a global leader in reusable plastic pallet pooling solutions. Since switching just 40% of our Eurosized wooden pallets to plastic, we’ve saved nearly 500 tons of CO2 in 2023, with more expected in 2024 and beyond. Want to learn more about this partnership?
