POWER Engineers upgrades AEP transmission lines without disruption

Over 70% of the U.S. electric grid is more than 25 years old. When American Electric Power (AEP) planned to upgrade two 30-year-old 345 kV transmission lines without service disruption, POWER Engineers’ designed a temporary, single-phase solution that enabled replacement across 240 line-miles without disrupting the power supply. Our team used high-capacity cables with a carbon and glass fiber composite core, nearly doubling the line's capacity while minimizing sag and avoiding the cost of replacing existing structures. This approach saved AEP millions of dollars. We also provided design services for a complete overhaul of five substations, including Corpus Christi’s Lon Hill Substation where both 345 kV lines originate, increasing their resilience against hurricane winds and corrosive salt spray from the Gulf of Mexico.
