Might be a bit of a controversial one but worth sharing because a few people asked off the back of a recent post. Most designers obsess over their portfolio. They: - slave over it - redo it - polish it. - chuck it out and start again And don’t get me wrong, a folio is important. But it often doesn’t hold as much weight as people think. It’s a stepping stone to an interview. It won’t ever really get you the job on its own. Meanwhile, the CV, which can be just as, if not more important, often doesn’t get nearly the same care and attention. For context, in the last four roles I’ve hired for: Content + Marketing roles → 100% - CV, no folio Service Design → ~90% - CV, folio was more of a sense check Product Design → ~60/40 split - leaning more towards folio Even in the Product Design case, that CV was really important. It’s the thing that gets you through the first filter, frames your story and gives weight to the work that follows in the folio. So my advice: a) don’t kill yourself over the portfolio. b) put a decent level of care / thought into your CV. (FYI - please leave off those silly slider things … they’re not helping anyone 😬) #Design

Had my longest “wehhhhhhh” + jaw-drop moment when I found out someone paid hundreds for a resume that looked exactly like one from Canva. 😭 I mean, freshies... You’d rather spend your money on a resume crafting service instead of taking FREE courses that give you certifications and actual skills (which actually increase your chances of getting hired)? Nah, don’t tell me “I hired them to check my wording, not the format or design.” Bruhh. If you have zero experience, no upskilling, and no certifications, what exactly in it to “enhance”? 👀 There are tons of free resume templates online. Use them. Nobody’s paying you just because your font looks nice. Your skills get you in the door. Not your Canva layout.

#Accessibility isn’t just a thing for websites. Even a resume can be real pain. If your CV looks like an escape room made of font sizes, colors, and text blocks… well, at least my motivation as a recruiter to dig into the content suffers. Don’t worry—I’ll still do it. 🤡 Accessibility in your application documents means: ➡️ Readable contrast. Black on white, not light gray on white, and definitely not on light blue. ➡️ Sufficient font size. 10pt is not a badge of courage. ➡️ Breathing space between lines & paragraphs. Let your text breathe! ➡️ Less is more. Relevance > novel. After all, you’re applying for a job, not a design award. And if it is a design job, just send me a portfolio. leave the CV alone. Good readability is an underrated recruiting tool.

A common trap: Spending hours on design, colors, fancy icons. The reality is, folks hiring spend 6–7 seconds scanning your CV. That’s it. They’re not admiring your Canva template. They’re looking for: - Structure (easy to scan) - Clarity (easy to understand) - Signals (key words, impact, results) - Fit (do you match the role?) Beautiful design doesn’t hide weak content. A strong CV can shine even in black & white.

Your resume is not a graphic design project. I know Canva is tempting with all the colors and shapes but recruiters don’t want to struggle to read your resume. Here’s what works better: ✔️ Keep it simple (Google Docs or MS Word is fine). ✔️ Fonts like Times New Roman, Calibri, or Arial (size 11–12). ✔️ Stick to bullet points they’re easier to scan. ✔️ 1–2 pages max (unless the job specifies). Other tips: ❌ Remove unnecessary info (marital status, primary school, full address). ✔️ Keep just your name (bold), phone number, email, LinkedIn, and maybe portfolio. ✔️ Use consistent headings (Education, Experience, Skills, Certifications). Think of it this way: your resume should be readable, professional, and safe.
