🌳 Temporary Trees, Lasting Impact! As part of the city’s “Grünes Gastspiel” pilot project, around 50 trees were temporarily placed along Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich. Sensors measuring soil moisture, CO₂, and barometric pressure enable real-time tracking and offer valuable insights into the long-term potential of temporary urban greenery in Zurich. https://lnkd.in/dyAqGJd7

Great project from Decentlab. This straightforward and scalable solution not only makes it easier to green a city, but also does so in a financially sustainable way — where the total cost of ownership of sensor-based monitoring is lower than replacing trees lost due to undetected soil issues. Make cities greener and cut costs -> everyone wins 🌳 ✂️ 💲 🎉

A series of posts have been designed to raise awareness and understanding of key Cool Neighbourhoods tools and concepts. Each one explains the topic in general language, highlights its role in the project, and states the long-term benefits. The first post is that of....What is Citizen Science? In Cool Neighbourhoods, citizen science means putting the power of data collection into the hands of residents. 👥 Through simple tools such as temperature sensors and short surveys, citizens help Cool Neighbourhoods measure how heat affects their neighbourhoods — both outdoors and inside homes. This real-world data helps local authorities better understand the urban heat island effect and identify where greening or shading measures will have the biggest impact. 🌡️ Citizen science builds awareness, trust, and collaboration between communities and municipalities. Over time, it leads to smarter climate action and more liveable neighbourhoods for everyone. A city's true strength isn't just in its skyline, it's in the materials that build it. We envision smart cities with seamless technology and connected systems. But for a city to truly be intelligent, its foundation must be just as smart. Our latest blog, "Smart Cities, Smarter Materials - How FRP is Shaping Urban Sustainability," explores the unsung heroes of urban development. It unveils how eco-smart materials are creating a more durable, efficient and resilient urban future. Cities are transforming — from collections of buildings to living, responsive systems. 🏙️ In her new whitepaper "Building Tech Cities", Sila Egridere explores how this transformation is reshaping the built environment and what it means for professionals designing tomorrow’s urban landscapes. Buildings are becoming active nodes within systems of energy, mobility, culture, and data. This shift redefines cities — from static structures to adaptive ecosystems that balance efficiency, resilience, and human needs. Traditional sustainability – minimizing harm – is no longer enough. The future lies in adaptability and regeneration, where digitalization, circular design, and civic participation form the foundation of truly resilient urban systems. 🔗 Discover how urban systems can evolve from smart to truly living ecosystems: https://lnkd.in/eKvVTciS

🌍 𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫: 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 Urban areas across the globe – including Hungary – are facing growing challenges from heatwaves, intense rainfall, and water stress. How can cities respond effectively? During Urban October, a global initiative by UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), our international teams at Drees & Sommer are showcasing practical climate adaptation strategies that deliver real impact: 🌳 Shaded public spaces and tree-lined boulevards 🏙️ Reflective materials to reduce urban heat 💧 Reopening sealed surfaces to improve microclimates 🌬️ Smart vertical design for better airflow in dense areas 💻 Digital tools for climate-sensitive urban planning Each solution is tailored to local conditions and cultures, as every city, from Berlin to Budapest, faces unique challenges. The goal: urban spaces that thrive under changing climate conditions and support sustainable, livable environments. #UrbanOctober #ClimateResilience #UrbanAdaptation #SustainableCities #DreesSommer #Hungary

Germany’s Path to Sustainable Cities Lately, I’ve been exploring how German cities center sustainability in urban planning—not just expanding, but doing so thoughtfully for people, nature, and climate. Take Freiburg’s Vauban for example: solar roofs, energy-efficient homes, greener public spaces, fewer cars. Then there’s how policies like the urban expansion of Energiewende are pushing cities to increase solar adoption and rethink mobility. These aren’t just ideas—they are being built. Step by step, through design, innovation, and public policy. 🌱 🔗 Some good reads: -BMZ: Sustainable Urban Development Position Paper (2023) Link- https://lnkd.in/evTyPuQZ -BMZ: Key Areas of Sustainable Urban Development BMZ Link- https://lnkd.in/eqQXYwRg. -Urban Expansion of Energiewende in Germany (Springer Article) Link- https://lnkd.in/eZhmmtTF #UrbanDevelopment #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #GreenCities #ClimateAction

Successful Pilot Project in Hallein – Rif Rehhof Primary School Together with the City of Hallein, we are proud to have achieved significant results in energy efficiency and climate protection: 📊 9.53 % energy savings 💶 €1,835 cost savings 🌍 3,720 kg CO₂e reduction – within just 15 months This project clearly demonstrates how EndoTherm improves the efficiency of existing heating systems – without any structural changes. A special thanks goes to our partner Martin Schmiedt Siebenhaar (VITALOWOHL), who played a key role in driving this project in Austria – in close cooperation with us at KE Klimaschutz Einfach GmbH. 👉 The full case study will be shared in the first comment. 1wWhy temporary? Is it just temporary as a trial, if the trial is sucessfull, would they become permanent? I was wondering if they could be moved around and become an artistic pattern to link into local events etc.
