Our accredited researchers gain access to administrative data research to analyse public data for the public good. One of ADR Scotland's delivery partners, Research Data Scotland, has developed a platform called the Researcher Access Service, which will enable researchers to receive the data quicker. Here, Katie, their Engagement Manager, explains how their workshops with the public went, when discussing how public sector data should be accessed for research, for what reasons and by whom. It was a pleasure working with Research Data Scotland to explore public opinions on data access for research. This new report brings together findings from deliberative workshops where 32 members of the public had the chance to learn, discuss and reach conclusions. We're grateful for all their input. Key takeaways: 🟩 Researchers need to demonstrate their project is in the public good before being granted access to public sector data. 🟩 Public good means there are tangible benefits, public wellbeing is prioritised over financial interests and robust safeguards to protect vulnerable groups. 🟩 Any private sector access should be subject to rigorous and appropriate safeguards. 🟩 There is clear support for public involvement in decisions about sharing data for research, and a desire for more proactive communication to build trust and awareness. Government data is frequently utilized, but the question arises: is it being thoroughly examined? Data journalist Sandra Fish emphasizes the importance of understanding the origins and compilation methods of data, whether from government or academic sources. Consider who entered the data and potential human errors, particularly in fields like lobbying and campaign finance. Asking these questions can improve data accuracy. 📺 Full discussion on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/eMj9u8Gb #datajournalism #governmentdata #dataanalysis #accuracy #datascience

𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 I’ve had the privilege of working in the government technology space for six years. While my title says “marketing,” I see my role as shining a light on the honorable, often unseen work of clerks and public records managers. Their work is complex, frequently thankless, and absolutely essential. Before I create, I listen. I research. I analyze. And today, I’m sharing insights from the latest 2025 Public Records Request Complexity Report. The numbers are staggering: 📈 72% increase in overall complexity 📁 438% increase in response file sizes (including a 173% jump in video files) 📥 161% increase in request volume All while many teams are still relying on sharpies, paper, binders, spreadsheets, and email. The good news? Purpose-built technology exists to help. My hope is that this report empowers clerks, records managers, legal teams, and everyone involved in public records to advocate for the tools they need to meet rising complexity with confidence. Interesting read by Stefaan Verhulst, PhD, Roeland Beerten and Johannes Jütting - From Averages to Agency: Rethinking Official Statistics for the 21st Century "The vision of citizen-centric data begins from the recognition that, in a world saturated with data and information overload, the real scarcities we face are of meaning, agency and trust. Statistical agencies are often part of the problem because they are insufficiently focused on their clients, i.e., citizens. But if agencies and governments embrace the potential of more participatory approaches, they can be far more than mere producers of charts and spreadsheets. They can become facilitators of collective intelligence, architects of inclusion, and stewards of a more empathetic and effective public sector. This is the vision of citizen-centric statistics. To achieve this vision, we need to cultivate new forms and mechanisms of governance, create decision accelerators and deliberative spaces for communities to define what matters and why. We must invest in data stewards and expand their roles to include connecting communities, technologists, decision-makers, and other stakeholders, and embed feedback loops to ensure people see how their input can shape policy and affect their lives." https://lnkd.in/dSf77jj8

On another platform, Jed Kolko asked, “So how is everyone feeling about private sector data subbing in for official statistics?” And my answer is: It’s much better to have the private sector data than not, but there’s a big knowledge gap that’s getting bigger and going mostly unfilled.
