The EV apocalypse… only seen from one country. The recent Rivian layoffs reignited talk of an “EV collapse.” But that narrative says more about American news cycles than global reality. 🇺🇸 Yes — EV demand has cooled in the U.S. Market share hovers around 9–10 %, incentives have become complex, and several automakers are scaling back production. The U.S. EV story right now is one of plateauing momentum rather than growth. 🌍 But globally, it’s a very different story. EV sales worldwide topped 17 million in 2024, up nearly 30 %. => China is accelerating — more than one in three new cars sold is electric. => Europe is still growing overall, even if not evenly. Some brands (like Tesla) and a few markets saw short-term declines, but across the continent, EV registrations continue to rise year over year. => India’s EV market is projected to reach ~US$ 54.41 billion in 2025, and then double to ~US$ 110.7 billion by 2029. => In Latin America & the Caribbean, EV adoption nearly tripled in 2024 — Brazil and Mexico leading the way.  => In Africa, the EV market is still early stage but projected to grow rapidly, with the industry expected to reach ~$17.4 billion in 2025. In other words: this isn’t a global downturn — it’s a regional slowdown amplified by headlines. The bigger risk isn’t an “EV bust.” It’s U.S. isolationism in perspective — mistaking local turbulence for a global storm. An EV reality check is here. Today Rivian layoffs, last week General Motors ending EV production in Ingersoll, and most rebates phasing out paint a stark picture. Not long ago, EVs felt like the only way forward. Now, with manufacturing cuts driven by slower than expected consumer demand (despite increase in Tesla sales yesterday), the future seems less assured. Why the hesitation? A primary factor is the persistent lack of reliable public charging infrastructure. Range anxiety is still a major hurdle for many but there's a deeper, electrifying challenge: the rapidly growing, ravenous energy thirst of Data Centers. With AI and cloud services exploding, these facilities are becoming power vacuums and straining local grids. How can we build a robust, nationwide EV charging grid when a parallel, ravenous demand from the data sector is competing for the same electrons and grid upgrades? But there is always a silver lining! This unprecedented need for massive, new power capacity means the future for skilled trades is incredibly bright. Every EV charger, every battery factory, and every AI data center requires thousands of electricians, HVAC technicians, welders, and pipefitters. These are high-demand, high-wage careers that will be the true builders of the new electric economy. EVs were supposed to be the future, right? Billions poured in, people rallied, automakers rebranded. And yet here we are, infrastructure never caught up, and adoption is stalling. Now look at AI. It’s the opposite problem. The infrastructure is ready, the hype is off the charts, but the real demand isn’t there yet. So what can AI learn from EVs? Maybe that hype can build faster than reality can deliver.
