Back in 2023, I had the chance to work on one of the most meaningful projects of my time at SCAD: Symbionics, a prosthetic system designed to learn from the user and adapt with them. Our research uncovered a striking problem: 23% of upper-limb amputees do not use prosthetics, often due to discomfort, lack of functionality, or frustration with myoelectric malfunctions. We set out to design a solution that not only addressed physical needs, but also restored confidence, usability, and dignity. The result was a system that combined: 🧤 A smart glove that captured natural gestures through flex sensors and gyroscopes ✋ A prosthetic hand with built-in object recognition, adapting grip to the environment 📱 A companion app that guided rehabilitation, tracked progress, and fostered a community of users This project was recognized internationally, receiving a Red Dot Award and Indigo Silver Award. More importantly, it pushed me to grow as a designer, teaching me the value of electronic prototyping, sensor integration, and human-centered innovation. Symbionics reminded me that design is not just about solving technical problems, but about creating tools that empower people to live more fully. When I first started sketching up ideas of an affordable ultrashort pulse laser, my only target was to enable this technology for many like myself. I experienced the problem from first hand - these lasers are currently complex and impractically expensive for mainstream applications. As usual for an expert founder, non-technical details were further down on the to-do list. As I speak to more and more potential users, it becomes clear that our simplified laser architecture makes SO MUCH sense. Lasers can replace sources in x-ray machines, can be used for labelling any packaging, making implants in the dentistry, storing data and much more. Low price and simplification is often not considered as a Unique Selling Point, but in this case it's the most important thing. After we caught up with the commercial side of the planning, we quickly realized that the future is extremely optimistic due to the upcoming widespread adaptation. The below chart shows our revenue projections based on forecast provided by 15+ interested early adaptor customers. That said, I challenge you to name a single object which won't ever have an ultrafast laser application! If you are thinking of air or water, think again. 😁

While millions of amputees and accident victims across India and much of the developing world live with upper limb limitations, advanced prosthetic arms remain out of reach. Most models cost between INR 70,000 and 4 lakh, placing them far beyond the means of those who need them most. At Ahmedabad University, a research team comprising our engineering graduates Hetav Shah and Dev Shah of the Class of 2024 along with Professor Maryam Kaveshgar developed a prototype prosthetic arm with multiple gripping patterns, electromyography (EMG) based control and adaptive design at a cost of just INR 8,500. EMG records the tiny electrical signals that muscles naturally generate when they contract. By placing small sensors on the forearm, these signals can be captured and translated into real hand movements, allowing the prosthetic to respond in ways that feel more natural and intuitive. Their work progressed from an initial three claw prototype to a more advanced five claw model, showing how engineering can address accessibility challenges by combining adaptive features, enhanced grip patterns and affordability. This prototype makes one fact clear: Advanced prosthetic technology does not have to be prohibitively expensive. If innovations like this can be scaled, millions who are currently excluded from prosthetic care could regain essential functions of daily life at a fraction of today’s cost. (1/2) Hand Gesture Controlled Wheelchair- This project presents a low cost, wireless gesture controlled vehicle designed to enhance mobility and human machine interaction. Using MPU-6050 motion sensors, Arduino and nRF24L01 transceivers, the system interprets hand gestures through a wearable glove to control the vehicle’s movement in real time. The integration of L298N motor drivers and TT motors ensures smooth and responsive motion, while 3D printed structural components enhance portability and modularity. This project demonstrates potential of embedded systems and assistive robotics in creating intuitive, user friendly mechanisms for future mobility solutions.
