Let’s stop pretending we all agree on what meaningful patient involvement in clinical trial design actually means. Yesterday, in a brilliant conversation with Karen Woolley and Thomas Smith , we found ourselves asking a deceptively simple question: 👉 What actually defines significant or acceptable patient involvement in clinical protocol design and patient materials? Everyone nods at the principle. But when you press for specifics, numbers, diversity, types of involvement, the room suddenly gets very quiet. 🤔Is it two patients on a steering committee? 🤔A ten person advisory board? 🤔A few reviewers for the patient information sheet? Or something else entirely? Karen, Tom and I did not land on a neat answer, and frankly, why should we assume we are the best people to define it? So I am throwing this out to you. What would you consider to be a reasonable, credible definition of meaningful patient involvement? I am talking specifics: how many, which kinds of voices, and at what stages. A deceptively simple question. What is 'meaningful' patient involvement in clinical trial design? You know the answer when you see it, feel it, and you are part of it. But what criteria define 'meaningful', specifically for trial design? There are prompts from #SPIRIT #CONSORT #GRIPP2 The BMJ, guidance from PFMD NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) EUPATI FDA PFDD, and a precedent model from #PatientsIncluded.
