Hong Kong has welcomed a sustainable and responsible development of the Web3 and virtual asset ecosystem. Motivated by these developments, the Hong Kong Institute for Monetary and Financial Research (HKIMR), the research arm of the Hong Kong Academy of Finance (AoF), released two new research reports today titled “Decentralised Finance: Current Landscape and Regulatory Developments” and “The Metaverse: Opportunities and Challenges for the Financial Services Industry” respectively. Mr Enoch Fung, Chief Executive Officer of the AoF and Executive Director of the HKIMR (left), and Mr Giorgio Valente, Head of the HKIMR (right), hosted a press briefing to share the key findings of the reports. The two reports provide an in-depth analysis of DeFi and the metaverse, their applications for the financial services industry, and an overview of the regulatory landscape internationally and in Hong Kong. They discuss the local market practitioners’ engagement, opportunities and challenges, and the talent landscape associated with the evolution of these technologies. The reports conclude by proposing some considerations for promoting the healthy development and application of these technologies for the financial services industry in Hong Kong. During blockchain week in Bangkok Alex Svanevik touched upon the thesis that the World Economic Forum and governments impose on us:    «You'll own nothing and be happy».    Frankly speaking, it doesn't sound optimistic for me, but in fact, it is already happening:    🏠 There is a gradual disappointment in the real estate market for investors due to the INSECURITY OF THEIR OWN ASSETS (moratoriums on evictions, squatters, real estate confiscations etc.) Tenants become limited in their rights and lose their RIGHT OF OWNERSHIP, and governments don't know how to deal with it. Sad truth, huh?   💹 Your assets may simply be frozen in stock market due to circumstances beyond your control based on your citizenship.   💵 Geopolitical issues and sanctions directly limit banking operations for regular users. OPPORTUNITIES BECOME LIMITED IN THE TRADITIONAL SYSTEM. I like how Alex explained the vision of Nansen and the whole crypto world in general: «I want us to work towards the world where people are ACTUAL OWNERS, and have access to the upside of these assets, which become more valuable». Indeed, there are incredible distribution and resources behind the chains and applications based on blockchain. Blockchain networks and apps have remarkable distributions and resources. Cutting-edge solutions in NFT allow holders to contribute to value generation and connect with the Web3 community, and even more is yet to come. BLOCKCHAIN = UNLIMITED OPPORTUNITIES AND OWNERSHIP.

This is a slide from my recent presentation at the MKGA Summit. As you look at this, you might be thinking, "ISN'T THE KOREAN MARKET TOO TOUGH?" And that’s a valid question, but I see several positives. ✅ First, institutions haven't entered the market since the corporate investment ban in 2017. However, with the implementation of the user protection act and the establishment of market integrity, I believe it’s only a matter of time before these restrictions are lifted, allowing the market to significantly expand. ✅ Second, gaining recognition in such a strict regulatory environment gives you a competitive edge globally. If you can thrive here, you'll have a significant advantage when entering other markets. ✅ Third, Koreans have always had a deep passion for crypto. Back in 2017, the government even considered shutting down exchanges, yet the Korean crypto market has persisted to this day. And I believe it will continue to thrive, just as it always has. 🔆 Among the major players in this market, I highly recommend you keep 코빗(Korbit) in mind. Custodians for institutionals were facilitating discussions with Fireblocks (Tim Bruenjes) hosting a fantastic venue for three days as well as "Tokenization and Tonic" with Polygon Labs. At the same time additional offers for institutionals aiming at DeFi are rising, e.g. FORDEFI (Josh Schwartz).
