Understanding the power law in venture capital: research shows that just 100 deals generated more than 70% of all VC returns over the last decade. In a 1,000-deal sample, the top 1% of investments produce about 14% of total returns, while half of deals contribute barely 11%. This extreme concentration means that capturing a single outlier can define a fund’s success. Diversification isn’t about spraying capital at every startup – it’s about constructing a portfolio wide enough to catch outliers while remaining disciplined.
