This week, we completed site testing for another project—one that has been pivotal in my growth as a Protection and Automation Engineer. It was a Utility-Generator Paralleling Project with a closed transition return to normal power—a truly special and technically enriching experience. I had the incredible opportunity to configure the entire Substation Automation Protection and Control scope for MV and LV system. This project allowed me to work hands-on with a wide variety of devices: ✅ HMI design (WinCC) ✅ RTU configuration (SICAM A8000 redundant controllers) ✅ Network setup ✅ Protection relay configuration (Siprotec 5 – Generator protection, AFP, High Impedance Bus Diff, 50BF) ✅ Generator controller configuration (DEIF AGC 4 Mk II) ✅ Time synchronization Throughout this journey we got to learn about different concepts Power System Protection, Automation, and Control. We used the Auto Synchronizer function in our utility 7SJ82 relay to send Voltage and frequency bias pulses to our Gen protection relay 7UM85 using IEC 61850 GOOSE which then forwarded these to the DEIF AGC 4 controller. We also used GOOSE for 50BF tripping, Bus diff interlocking, and breaking the parallel within 10 cycles. I want to thank my mentor Rodrigo Munoz for his support and guidance.
