AI is the defining technology of our time and will change many industries. But how about a group of companies raising $50-100M without real products and market adoption? There is an AI bubble too in front of our eyes in Silicon Valley. Quick story and example :: Met a candidate yesterday for a role. She joined a Series A startup, which has raised $120M at Series A stage (!!!). The product is not some foundational science. They were able to raise capital on Founder Pedigree. Mostly, an AI researcher at one of the Big-7 tech companies or research labs, can raise a $20M round for their company, if they sneeze. 12 months in they have barely any PMF. <$2M ARR and no signs of strong growth other than bespoke custom build projects. This is not a one-off. There are dozens of such companies which have raised $50M+ in VC dollars. Such companies will be coming home to roost in maybe 6-12 months from now. The employees of such companies are already realizing and jumping ship but the cash is not running out yet for TechCrunch, Information and wider ecosystem to notice. For every company that is growing $1->$10->$100M in ARR there are dozens of shell companies. Maybe by summer of next year this mad rush will slow down and the REAL winners will emerge? Thoughts? Are others seeing something close?
