The quantum computing race is on. Google's Willow chip may be grabbing headlines, but IBM has also made huge strides this year. And the company's quantum chief, Jay Gambetta, sees an entirely different path to quantum advantage. Adam Bluestein spoke with Gambetta about why hardware is just half of what it'll take to bring quantum computing to life. https://lnkd.in/ePmityEa

Getting to Quantum They wont be powering your phone anytime soon (maybe never), but IBM is betting that there will be some useful applications for their Quantum machines before the end of the decade. What will they be useful for? Well not Tetris or Gears of War but rather where you need serious modelling like: Simulating molecular interactions (drug and biological research), climate modelling (maybe we will get more accurate weather predictions), machine learning and picking up where the WOPR failed in 1983 and working out the launch codes. And of course breaking the Internet and everyone's passwords. Should be interesting to watch over the next few years.

Wells Fargo published another story on quantum computing this month: https://lnkd.in/g9ZrRJUc. It includes some quotes from Vanio, myself, and a nice video message from Dario Gil from the session at SXSW with Chintan Mehta. When investigating problems that can benefit from a quantum approach, we look for reusable principles and systematic approaches, we don't chase headlines. Quantum computing is computing, and it is about software, as much as research. Charlee Stefanski and Saveliy Y. are mentioned in this context. Enhancing current AI deployments with quantum counterparts may take some time, but team members like Samuel Yen-Chi Chen are making progress in this field. We are also working with partners like Vladimir R., Iordanis Kerenidis, Anna Topol, Heather Higgins. Education is also an important aspect of our efforts, in order to convince the community that quantum computing is accessible, and in order to avoid the massive hype wave that sometimes accompanies new technologies. #quantumcomputing #ibm

It’s an unscientific fact that nine out of every 10 conversations about tech in the past year have been about AI. But the 10th has been about quantum computing. In a period of just over a year, the perennial technology of the future has become suddenly real—with major breakthroughs in computing hardware and software, significant public and private investments, and rising stock prices for companies in the burgeoning quantum ecosystem.
