From Blackhillock to Kilmarnock: powering grid stability in Scotland With Phase 1 of Blackhillock now live, another milestone in Great Britain’s energy transition is moving closer to reality. Kilmarnock South—an even larger project—is a 300 MW / 600 MWh battery energy storage facility that will: ✅ Cut over 3.4 million tonnes of CO₂ ✅ Deliver an estimated £1 billion in energy system savings by reducing wasted renewable power over 15 years. We’re proud to once again partner with Zenobē and Wärtsilä, delivering 102 Medium Voltage Power Stations (MVPS) with our Sunny Central Storage UP inverters. Together, these solutions provide the critical grid services—inertia, short-circuit support, and fast frequency response—needed to strengthen the grid as the UK accelerates its transition from fossil fuels. Set to be operational by late 2025, Kilmarnock South will play a key role in making a 100% renewable grid not only achievable—but stable and resilient. Congratulations to SMA Solar and partners Zenobē and Wärtsilä on advancing Phase 1 of Blackhillock and moving closer to operationalizing the Kilmarnock South 300 MW / 600 MWh storage project. The scale of CO₂ reduction and the potential £1 billion energy system savings demonstrate the critical role of large-scale battery storage in enabling a stable, resilient, and fully renewable grid in Great Britain. Looking forward to seeing the continued progress toward the late 2025 operational target and the enhanced grid stability these technologies will deliver.
Would be great to present this at barcampn2025.
