Starlab's European User Conference: Shaping Europe's Future in Space

Today is the opening of the CometLab, advanced makerspace for the Space community. Young students can work together with experienced Space professionals on creating prototypes of satellites, ground stations, optical or other space inspired technologies. Featured this morning in the national RTL news. It has been much work over the last years for the entire team to realize this dream. Ferreira serving as space experts for the ongoing competition. Eleven UKspace members are contributing to new projects announced today spanning life sciences, communications, in-orbit servicing, Earth observation and advanced materials, that will strengthen international space partnerships, develop national capabilities and boost economic growth for the UK. The 23 projects announced today by the UK Space Agency are part of the successful International Bilateral Fund (IBF), representing a £6.5 million boost for UK companies and universities collaborating internationally on space innovation with partners in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Japan, Lithuania and the USA. Assimila Ltd, BAE Systems, Frontier Space, Goonhilly, Kayser Space Ltd, Lodestar Space, Lúnasa Space, Meridian Space Command, Open Cosmos, Satellite Applications Catapult and Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) are involved in projects that range from autonomous 3D printing and lunar agriculture to orbital threat detection, biotech manufacturing, medical research and deep space radar, showcasing the breadth of expertise across the UK’s vibrant space sector. 🚀 Artenum at SPINE Meeting 2025 – Looking Back at a Great Week in Madrid 🚀 Last week, the SPINE Meeting 2025 brought together the international community working on spacecraft–plasma interactions and charging effects, hosted by Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M). Artenum was proud to contribute with five presentations, showcasing our latest developments in: 🔹 Surface and internal charging modelling 🔹 Multipactor and high-frequency breakdown analysis 🔹 High-performance simulation workflows 🔹 Open collaboration within the SPIS community 💡 One highlight of our contributions: “SPIS Surface Charging: Progress from Version 6.2.0 to 6.2.6” This presentation presents last improvement in SPIS surface charging modelling, helping mission designers better anticipate electrostatic effects in orbit. Interesting take from Francisco Córdova (Chief Operating Officer for the International Space Station National Laboratory). For those who don't know this entity (like me 10 minutes ago), the ISS National Lab "offers adaptable partnership models, providing organizations, companies, and academic institutions the ability to utilize the unique features of the ISS". M. Córdova is tackling the question of what comes after the ISS, and especially uncrewed automated space stations and what they can bring. In a nutshell, LEO will no longer be solely the domain of governments. In this private economy landscape, both crewed and uncrewed (private and public) platforms will play distinct yet complementary roles. Uncrewed systems, particularly smaller autonomous research modules, will offer an ideal test bed for proof-of-concept technologies for early-stage R&D, while larger uncrewed platforms will become essential for scaling up production of high-value goods that benefit uniquely from microgravity. Frontier Space reaches orbit! 🚀 Frontier Space — a graduate of the ESA Business Incubation Centre United Kingdom (ESA BIC) at Space Park Leicester — has successfully completed its first orbital mission, marking a major step forward in space-based biotechnology and manufacturing. Launched aboard SpaceX’s Bandwagon-3 in partnership with ATMOS Space Cargo, the mission validated the company’s SpaceLab Mark 1, a miniature self-contained laboratory for conducting microgravity research in orbit.
