🔁 UPI AutoPay: The Tech Behind Recurring Payments From OTT subscriptions to EMIs, UPI AutoPay (eMandates) removes the hassle of remembering due dates and making manual payments. In Southeast Asia, Grab sits on nearly every smartphone. In China, WeChat is used for everything, to the point it is almost the internet itself. Super-apps are not a founder’s dream; they exist, and they work. But in India, every attempt at this dream seems to falter. Take Swiggy. It leaned into the super-app play by bundling food delivery, Instamart, Genie, and Dineout into one mother app. But by early 2025, the seams began to show. Instamart was spun out as a standalone app, even partially dropping the Swiggy branding to assert independence. Snacc too was launched separately with an all new branding. While most services still remain inside the main app, Swiggy’s conviction in the super-app model looks visibly shaken, especially with Blinkit capturing more than 45% of the quick commerce market without ever being integrated into Zomato. So why does the super-app model fly in Southeast Asia but stall in India? The answer could be UPI. In Southeast Asia, wallets are the glue. GrabPay processes roughly 75% of Grab’s transactions, and more than half of its users adopt multiple services because their money, rewards, and perks are locked inside. The wallet builds the moat, the walled garden that keeps users locked in. India broke those walls with UPI. Today, 83% of all digital payments flow through it. My bank account talks to Swiggy, Blinkit, Flipkart, Ola, and Uber seamlessly, without friction. With no lock-in, loyalty collapses to the basics: availability, pricing, user experience, and brand trust. So while Grab in Vietnam feels smooth and almost obvious, in India, this stickiness is scattered. We still don’t have a truly universal super-app that just works, and UPI could be the reason why.

Paytm has launched ‘Paytm Postpaid’ on UPI, enabling consumers to make payments using a credit line across all merchant touchpoints. Powered by NPCI and offered in partnership with Suryodaya Small Finance Bank, the service introduces the concept of ‘Spend Now, Pay Next Month’, giving users access to instant short-term credit of up to 30 days. With this feature, Paytm users can scan any UPI QR code, shop online, recharge, pay bills, or make bookings directly on the Paytm app. The company said the service is currently available to a select base of users identified through their spending behaviour and will be expanded gradually. The best product doesn’t always win. The best distribution almost always does. Remember the early days of wallets? Paytm, Freecharge, MobiKwik where we had to top-up balances, and acceptance was patchy. Then UPI changed the game. No top-ups. One QR everywhere. Universal access. Wallets didn’t vanish. Amazon Pay, PhonePe, and GPay still exist but they won by riding UPI rails and embedding into behaviors people already had (shopping, recharges, bills). Same story elsewhere: 1. Zoom wasn’t the richest product. It just made adoption effortless. 2. WhatsApp Pay had the user base but failed to design distribution into daily behavior. Most teams still obsess over features. Few obsess over distribution design. The next big friction to remove isn’t “what more can we build?” It’s “how do we make adoption effortless, trusted, and embedded where people already are?” Because a great product without distribution is just potential energy.
