STATSports acquired by Sony, joins sports businesses

Sony’s acquisition of STATSports might be one of the most underestimated moves in sports tech this year. 👀 For those who don’t know STATSports, they’re the performance tracking company behind some of the biggest teams in the world: England, Brazil, Germany, Premier League clubs, NFL teams, and elite academies. Their GPS wearables capture sprint speeds, training loads, biometric markers, and more — powering real-time decision-making at the highest levels of sport. They don’t just sell trackers. They sell intelligence. Sony now owns this data layer. And remember, Sony isn’t just PlayStation, through Hawk-Eye, Beyond Sports, and KinaTrax, they already dominate officiating tech, video analytics, and visualization. Bringing STATSports into that ecosystem means Sony now controls: •Wearable performance data •Optical & video tracking •Analytics & visualization •Media, entertainment & distribution That’s a vertically integrated stack from athlete → data → broadcast → fan. The really interesting part is what happens if Sony uses its infrastructure (like Soneium) to create premium, trusted data products across teams, leagues, sponsors — or even make aggregated national data publicly available in structured ways. Imagine: •Prediction markets or forecasting models built on anonymized team fitness trends •Licensing team-level performance data with new revenue models •National-level data feeding into economic or participation forecasts •Unlocking entirely new layers of insight for clubs, federations, media & analysts This is no longer just a wearable company acquisition. It’s a strategic bridge between elite sport, data infrastructure, and entirely new business models. Not saying they will, just say they now can…. 🍿🍿

Athlete investment does work. Back in 2019 we (alongside Hector Bellerin) invested into STATSports. A market leader in sports technology widely seen being used by the most elite sports organisations and athletes around the world. Fast forward to 2025, the acquisition by Sony provides proof to the athlete investment thesis, when done correctly. There’s still a long way to go for athlete venture in Europe. However having been active in the space for 6-years we’ve definitely seen progress.

Sony has officially welcomed STATSports Group into its sports business by acquiring a majority share. Founded in 2008, STATSports is a leader in athlete monitoring solutions, serving over 800 top sports clubs! ⚽🏈🏑 Their innovative technology features wearable devices equipped with GPS, heart rate, and accelerometer sensors, delivering over 70 real-time metrics for immediate performance feedback. This acquisition enhances Sony's commitment to advancing sports performance analysis. Exciting!💥

This is massive for the sports industry and proves that Hawk-Eye wasn't a one-off. The true global tech giants are IN the M&A game of sports tech.

This week, Sony acquired STATSports, but it’s part of a much bigger play than most people realize. Over the past several years, we’ve seen a surge in M&A and consolidation across the sports ecosystem.
