As climate risks intensify — from 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐰𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐬 🌡️ to 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐬 🌊 and 𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 🌾 — the urgency to create 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐬 (𝐂𝐀𝐏𝐬) has never been greater. These plans aren’t just policy documents — they’re 𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐩𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐲. Using spatial insights powered by Google Earth Engine (Google Earth Engine (GEE) Outreach), we can integrate data on population density, land use, emissions, and climate hazards to design action plans that: ✅ Reduce greenhouse gas emissions ✅ Strengthen disaster preparedness ✅ Guide sustainable infrastructure investments ✅ Build climate-resilient communities 🌍 As an 𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, I see CAPs as a powerful bridge between 𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞. They empower decision-makers to prioritize interventions that not only mitigate climate change but also protect the most vulnerable populations. Every map tells a story. A story of change, resilience, and the ways people interact with their environment 🗺️. In Hertník, the yield of the drinking-water source has been declining for years. For the municipalities below the Čergov range, this isn’t just a statistic; it’s a threat to their most basic need: secure access to water. Each stakeholder sees the problem and its solutions differently. Spatial Justice Every void on the map is also a void in politics and in memory. Thanks to Céline Jacquin and Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team for inviting me to speak in their closing session of the National Mapatón, where they mapped the most vulnerable municipalities in the country to close gaps in geospatial information and strengthen decision-making in the face of climate and humanitarian crises. The Mapatón Nacional de México took place in a context of structural vulnerability. Many municipalities live with overlapping challenges: poverty, social exclusion, fragile infrastructure, and limited access to essential services. These conditions are often made worse by the absence of reliable geospatial information, which prevents effective planning and leaves entire communities invisible. At the same time, climate risks such as droughts, hurricanes, floods and heat waves are intensifying these inequalities. This year the initiative focused on priority territories in Chiapas, Michoacán, Quintana Roo, Oaxaca, Querétaro, Hidalgo, Nayarit, Sonora, Baja California Sur and the State of Mexico. These regions combine high climate exposure and structural inequality with critical geospatial data gaps. By mapping them, the Mapatón turned absence into presence, producing updated datasets that can guide territorial planning, participatory ecological management and community-based strategies for adaptation. In the end, spatial justice means ensuring that no community remains invisible on the map, and that no memory or struggle is left outside the story of the territory.
