Everyone is panic-skilling for AI. It's the wrong strategy. The belief that you need to learn Python, prompt engineering, or data science to be safe is the most expensive myth in corporate L&D today. I’ve spent the last year observing how leaders actually use Generative AI, and here is the non-obvious truth: The bottleneck isn't the AI's ability to execute; it's the human's ability to instruct. 🤯 AI will soon handle all the "how" (the execution). Your future value will be entirely in the "what" and the "why." This is the only future-proof skill: Structural Ambiguity & High-Context Questioning. It’s the ability to take a messy, unstructured business problem (e.g., "Our sales are flat") and decompose it into a clear, actionable set of inputs for an AI (or a team). It's knowing what data to ask for, what assumptions to challenge, and what frameworks to apply before you type the first word into ChatGPT or Midjourney. We can call it 'Prompt Engineering for Life.' It's not about the syntax of the prompt; it’s about the contextual depth of the human asking the question. Your technical skill is a commodity. Your judgment is not. The machine can write the code. It cannot decide what code should be written to solve a problem it doesn't fully understand yet. That's your job. That’s the high-leverage work. In today’s digital landscape, what does it mean to be literate? Naturally, it starts with the basic skills of reading and writing. This is a component that AI can never truly replace. In order to prompt, comprehend, or even fact-check an AI's output, you need to be able to compose your prompt (in the AI age we learnt how effective a well-worded prompt can be). Following this, you read the response. But that’s only the first layer of literacy. The true value of literacy lies in comprehensive skills. This can only be achieved by engaging with text and learning how to decipher nuance and decode context. Even mathematics demands a form of literacy. How could you judge the numbers in an AI's analysis if you lack the basic numeracy to sense-check its calculations? We see this playing out in the software space. Many headlines proclaim, "We don’t need programmers anymore!" because AI can generate code. But looking closer, you also find many experts exposing the issue of re-used erroneous code sourced from places like GitHub (a coding repository). Leaving it unchecked replicates buggy code instead of using sanitised (bug-fixed) source code.  There are many developer communities working on fixing erroneous code in existing libraries to prevent the issue at the source. While you can't prevent people (or AI) from using imperfect code, at least there is a movement committed to quality. Notably, the increasing use of erroneous code is on par with rising AI adoption. Without the literacy to read, understand, and debug, developers simply pass on AI-generated output and replicate hidden bugs at scale. This is why literacy is your most basic strategic asset. Following up from my earlier posts—first on rediscovering AI hands-on, and then on why Product and Project Managers need to build AI foundations… This one is for the developers out there. Your current project at work may or may not have an AI component. But that shouldn’t stop you. The best way to learn is by experimenting on your own. Pick a small passion project—something simple you care about—and try adding an AI element. Use an LLM for text, or try computer vision for something fun. These side projects will teach you far more than theory, and they’ll give you the confidence to bring AI into your day job when the chance comes. Don’t wait for permission—start small, stay curious, and keep building.
