Have you ever wondered how lithium ion batteries store energy, or how nano-sized particles of gold can be made, and how they differ from the bulk metal? In their new book 'Chemistry: A Cultural Perspective' (published by Taylor and Francis) Christine Bladon and Peter Wyatt from the Queen Mary Chemistry Department address these questions. They also examine how humans, and other animal species have manipulated atoms and molecules in healthcare and communication and strive to understand the history and prehistory of our planet. A special chapter provides detailed descriptions and suggestions for experiments, supplemented by online video recordings made in Queen Mary’s Joseph Priestley Building. In these we see deep red gold nanoparticles forming rapidly when solutions in water containing vitamin C and tiny quantities of a gold compound are mixed.

Single-use items are very popular in hospitals. It makes sense but when people ask about disposable preloaded headphones for surgery...? It really doesn't make sense, does it? First of all, in order to make them affordable, the sound quality would likely not be very good at all. And for people who love beautiful, calming music, that would probably increase anxiety and pain!! So we came up with three distinct options: 1. Pre-loaded, reusable headphones with disposable earpiece covers, suitable for patients who are having surgery (like joint replacement or C-section) but aren't really sick! Also, dental offices often purchase these for their patients. 2. MP3players that are preloaded, considerably less expensive, and can be branded for your practice/hospital and given to the patient for continued recovery at home. 3. Mobile apps that can be downloaded in app stores and utilized on patient's own Smartphone. There is truly something to meet the need of each patient and hospital situation! If we are to move oyster restoration to scale we need to accept, within the regulatory framework, the historical baseline that frames the ecosystem-scale required. Bottlenecks in substrate and oyster supply will also need to be overcome and licensing frameworks adapted with a presumption in favor of restoration activities.
