Thoroughly enjoyed this event and catching up with old clients, colleagues and industry experts. It was very interesting to get a short history lesson about the origins of FIX and then seeing how the various firms are gearing up for the future of electronic trading. From global expansion, adoption of new technologies and the ever evolving requirements of clients, regulators and exchanges. The South African sell side industry is certainly in good hands!!
After a 13-year absence, we have just held our 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, kindly hosted by the 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲. With 𝟭𝟱𝟬 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 from over 𝟱𝟬 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗺𝘀, and 𝟮𝟱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 over 𝟴 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, we covered topics from liquidity to connectivity, regulation to transformation, and what it all means for the local markets and investment communities. 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲: • How and why the reach of electronic trading and FIX usage across Africa varies across the continent. This is felt to be less about trading technology and connectivity, and more a symptom of legacy settlement infrastructures, rules and inertia. • Regulatory changes are coming in South Africa through the Financial Markets Act review. These will shake up market structure in a variety of ways, many of which will be familiar to traders in European markets. This is likely to be an area of focus for FIX given the ability to leverage our members’ experience of similar changes in Europe and beyond. • African market volumes have been growing steadily with planned changes such as trading hour extensions and settlement period shortening in Nigeria showing an increased alignment with European norms. • Technology is changing trading from cloud to AI and all points in between. Routing orders and trading across the continent has never been easier. Though adoption of these networks has so far been low, it is felt that the demand is there and it is only a matter of time before cross border volumes pick up. Overall, an insightful and enjoyable day with much learnt and many new friends made.
