Pedaling Hope: Terry Esau's Mission to Empower Underprivileged Youth Please allow me to introduce Terry Esau, the fourth of sixteen everyday leaders I will feature in the weeks leading up to The Difference Makers retreat on November 8. What a great guy Terry is. In 2010, Terry, a Minneapolis musician and avid cyclist, saw a problem: countless unused bicycles collecting dust in garages. His solution? Free Bikes 4 Kidz (FB4K)—a nonprofit dedicated to collecting, refurbishing, and distributing bicycles to underprivileged youth. Terry told me FB4K’s origin story. “What if we could give these bikes to kids who need them?” he thought. This idea sparked a movement that has grown exponentially since. Today, FB4K operates in 22 markets across the country and has gifted over 200,000 bikes to children in need. Terry’s journey reflects his deep commitment to service, grounded in his faith. After years of promoting products in the music industry, Terry realized his skills could be better used to promote something meaningful. His love for Jesus inspired him to turn his passion into a mission—one that brings joy, mobility, and opportunity to children across the nation. FB4K's success is driven by thousands of volunteers and partnerships with over 700 organizations, turning what started as a simple idea into a nationwide movement. It’s a beautiful example of Christian servanthood in action—meeting practical needs while showing love and compassion. Terry's work encourages us all to reflect: How can we use our unique talents and resources to serve others? As we prepare for our upcoming November 8 Christian retreat, The Difference Makers, I’m inspired by Terry’s example of servant leadership. It’s about stepping into a gap, seeing the need, and responding with love and dedication.
