Is the upcharge for kiln drying worth it for your timber frame? It depends, honestly. Douglas fir 🌲 tends to arrive at our shop fairly dry already. Generally, we find that the timbers will measure at about 19% moisture content when they leave our shop. This is about the moisture content that kiln drying produces. We will often kiln dry timbers for retro- fitted projects if the timbers are smaller. Sometimes, the design goal is to see where the checks will be- in this case, kiln drying is better. But, we often don't recommend it in most applications because the additional cost doesn't add enough benefit. We'd prefer to pay for Select Structural grade as opposed to #1 grade for the strength. Some species of timbers like White Oak are much more problematic to dry due to the cellular makeup of the wood. These timbers can be dried, but it must be done so very slowly, which adds significant costs. They can be air dried if managed well, but that is also time consuming since Oak dries very slow. We find that Oak performs best if it is cut and put up in a short time period. #peopleaskus #kilndrying #timberframe #lancotf #timbers #quality

I-Joists: Engineered for Performance I-Joists are lightweight, engineered wood structural members designed in the shape of an “I”. They consist of two horizontal flanges connected by a vertical web. Typically, the flanges are made from Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) or solid sawn lumber, while the web is constructed from Oriented Strand Board (OSB) or plywood. 🔍 Key Benefits of I-Joists Lightweight yet strong Capable of spanning long distances Dimensional stability and consistent sizing Efficient use of materials with reduced waste 🏠 Common Applications Residential floor systems Residential roof framing Commerical floor systems Identifying Quality: The I-Joist Markings 1. Metal is the backbone🧱 Brick façades are no longer limited to traditional four-inch masonry. Engineered brick rainscreen systems now use metal try and subframing components to support thin brick veneers. This approach provides continuous insulation, faster installation, and full code compliance while maintaining the classic look of brick. At Fairfield Metal, we specialize in the metal side of façades. Systems like these show how metal is becoming the foundation for nearly every cladding type, from aluminum panels to engineered brick rainscreens. Produce quality roof tiles Rooftile manufacturers are turning to quality production equipment to produce concrete rooftiles that are more in keeping with modern developers requirements for durable and cost-effective rooftiles that are more aesthetically appealing with stronger colours and finer finishes. For local tile producers the acquisition of ABECE equipment gives them an edge in a highly competitive roofing market where every cent counts. The advanced machinery maximises efficiency and reduces material usage with the added benefit of allowing individual producers to continuously develop their product lineup and introduce new innovations that are constantly being developed by the equipment manufacturer. Let's talk Tannin! 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧? In the context of wood, tannin staining typically refers to the discoloration that can occur when tannins within the wood react with moisture or metal components. European Oak contains large amounts of tannin which naturally bleeds and washes out of the timber as it dries. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠? When dried, fresh cut or green oak is used externally, large amounts of tannin will wash out of the timber. Tannin is a natural dye from the oak and may stain surrounding materials such as bricks, concrete, paving blocks etc. Although unsightly, the structural properties of the oak are rarely affected by tannin. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐈 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧? As tannin is a natural dye, the stain will naturally wash out over a period of time. If the staining needs to be removed before it naturally washes away, it can be treated by mixing oxalic acid or bicarbonate of soda with warm water and spraying on to the affected area. Leave it to soak and then wash it off with a hose or pressure washer.
