Anime's growth at the domestic box office over the past decade has been extraordinary, and it's not because more anime films are being released in theaters. Ten years ago, somewhere between $1 million and $2 million at the domestic box office was the benchmark. Now we're seeing $20 million for the average anime film—about in line with a drama or a dark comedy from an studio specialty division. https://lnkd.in/gQZtawrg

Planet Hong Kong: Popular Cinema and the Art of Entertainment (2000) is David Bordwell's love letter to the Hong Kong film industry. The book provides a comprehensive study of Hong Kong cinema, arguing for its artistic merit despite its commercial, mass-market roots. Bordwell explores the industry's unique craft traditions, production methods (like episodic plotting and segment shooting), and generic conventions of the Hong Kong film industry - spanning from kung fu, swordplay, gangster, and urban comedy genres - that enable filmmakers to produce works that are both hugely popular and aesthetically rich.

I lived through the collapse of the indie film middle class. There was a time when $400K could buy you a career — Napoleon Dynamite, El Mariachi, Clerks. That world is gone. Micro-budgets can survive because they’re cheap. Studio projects can survive because they have stars. But the $400K film? It’s the dead zone — too big to be scrappy, too small to compete. And that’s killing the future of new voices in cinema. #Hoorah99 #FilmIndustry #IndependentCinema #CreativeRebellion #FilmEconomics
