We, as an education company, understand the importance of literacy. Literacy is a fundamental human right and a foundation for acquiring broader knowledge, skills, values, attitudes, and behaviors. It creates opportunities for prosperous careers and a better quality of life. Yet, around 750 million people worldwide are unable to participate in the conversation because they cannot read or write. Additionally, 1 in 5 adults in the US struggles to read basic sentences, and 124 million children worldwide lack basic literacy skills. Rachel, our Sr. Staff Accountant shares how education has given her opportunities, highlighting the importance of our #SchoolSuccess Drive with Cornerstone Advocacy Services. "Education has been everything to me. It has helped me discover my passions and provided opportunities to travel and learn about diverse cultures. Through education, I’ve been able to secure a stable job and advance my career, opening up further personal opportunities. Most importantly, it has given me and my child a better life, which I am grateful for." Our interns have been raising money for The Children's Trust! They have also been learning about the work of Children In Need! Are you at your wits end trying to find and maintain a quality volunteer base? Us, too. In the year-and-a-half that we've been running this organization, we have had our ups and downs, much like you have. We've had people enthusiastically show up to fill a position, then vanish like the first snow. Rude. Other times, we know people suddenly have more on their plate and have to give up volunteering because of other priorities. Fair. And sometimes, people realize getting to a volunteering location is awkward with a lack of transportation to the site. Understandable. Especially for our under-16 crowd with no drivers licenses or car access. At the same time, we have been astounded at the quality and sophisticated level of volunteers that have stepped up to fill opportunities that seemed like pipe dreams. Strategic planners, board of directors members, organizational secretaries, treasurers, and so many more positions that require very specific skill sets. In fact, most of the 1525+ volunteers in our pool have very excellent qualifications. Before you @ us, every volunteer is precious to us, not just those with university degrees. We also treasure those who are sorting donations, pouring coffee, cleaning cages, or driving cars to get people to appointments. Do not underestimate your importance! Dear Santa, We’ve been very good this year—working long hours, stretching every dollar, and doing everything we can to make the world a better place. So, if it’s not too much trouble, here’s our wish list: 1. Unrestricted Funding – Let us use the money where it’s needed most. 2. Realistic Expectations – Please remind folks we can’t “do more with less.” 3. Paid Internships – Because everyone deserves fair pay, even when learning. 4. Respect for Boundaries – We need rest to keep doing this important work. 5. Fair Compensation – Nonprofit doesn’t mean working for free. 6. Fundraising Board Members – Ideas are great, but action is better. 7. No More “Pick Your Brain” Requests – Expertise deserves compensation, not just coffee. 8. Diverse Donor Pools – A wide base of support makes for a stronger mission. 9. Simpler Grant Applications – So we can focus on the work, not endless paperwork. 10. Genuine Gratitude – A heartfelt “thank you” makes a big difference. We promise to keep doing the good work—we just need a little help from you (and maybe some cookies for the team).
