"Without federal funding, we're going to fail the people of California.” - Dr. Fred Meyers Cancer affects millions of lives, but better treatments and outcomes start with research. Dr. Meyers is leading NIH-funded efforts to improve cancer care by exploring new treatment approaches, from precision medicine to immunotherapy. Without continued federal funding, progress in developing better therapies could slow, leaving patients with fewer options. Dr. Meyers explains how federal funding is used to train the next generation of scientists and doctors, and the gaps that will be created if that funding is lost. Diversity in clinical trials isn’t just a statistic, it’s essential to ensuring research findings are relevant and equitable for every patient. At Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, we are committed to rebuilding our clinical trials program from the ground up with diverse enrollment as a core priority. Under the leadership of Victor Lin, MD, PhD, medical director of Clinical Research and Genetics, we are taking concrete steps to expand access and improve representation, supported by a $400,000 grant from the Gilead Foundation. 📖 Read more about our approach and vision for the future in this Association of Cancer Care Centers Buzz feature: 👉 https://bit.ly/4ntebwh #ClinicalTrials #DiversityInResearch #MaryBirdPerkins #OncologyInnovation #CommunityInAction
About 85% of current participants in cancer clinical trials are White middle-class men. This lack of diversity results in findings that are not necessarily replicable to all patients. Leaders at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center are addressing this disparity by rebuilding their clinical trials program from the ground up, with diverse enrollment a cornerstone of their philosophy. To learn more about Mary Bird Perkins’ approach to clinical trials and the center’s plans for their $400,000 grant from the Gilead Foundation, ACCCBuzz spoke with Victor Lin, MD, PhD, medical director of Clinical Research and Genetics. Postdoctoral fellow Alessandra Riggio, PhD, studies how hormone-dependent breast cancer cells survive treatment and later awaken to cause relapse. In the lab of Dr. Alana Welm, she’s working to uncover how to keep those cells dormant—or eliminate them entirely. Alessandra reminds us that every breakthrough takes collaboration, resilience, and the shared goal of improving the lives of patients and families everywhere.

NIH-supported research has led to major improvements in cancer detection, treatment, and prevention, saving 3.5 million lives since 1991. Today, more than 15 different tumors can be treated by immunotherapy, but hundreds of others could be addressed with this approach. Sustained NIH funding is critical to ensure researchers can continue working toward lifesaving breakthroughs. #FundNIH #MedicalResearchMonth
