📣 Pre-announcement of the Philippines’ First International Land Subsidence Symposium! The First International Land Subsidence Symposium in the Philippines will gather international and national scientists, experts, practitioners, and decision-makers in Manila for a multi-day event. Beyond exchanging knowledge and fostering global learning and collaboration, the program includes a full-day field trip to North Manila Bay, highlighting the alarming impacts of accelerating land subsidence—exceeding 10 cm/yr in some areas—which increasingly exposes communities to flooding and tidal inundation. The symposium seeks to engage the global land subsidence community in developing solutions and shaping a science-based, common strategy for North Manila Bay. It builds on the First National Expert Roundtable on Land Subsidence (Feb 2025) and is organized by the National Engineering Center at University of the Philippines Diliman and Wageningen University & Research under the Drowning Deltas project funded by the Dutch Science Foundation NWO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek). Tentative schedule: April 20: Day 1: International Symposium – Science to Science April 21: Mid-symposium excursion: North Manila bay (per bus) April 22: Day 2: International Symposium – Towards science-based solutions - Science to Policy Registration details and symposium fee will be announced during the first circular.

It’s been a milestone-filled quarter, from advancing our Monitoring, Reporting & Verification (MRV), to driving innovation and strengthening global collaborations. We’ve progressed our R&D, shared our story on international stages, and joined forces with peers worldwide - each step bringing us closer to responsibly scaling marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). Two exciting updates to share: 🔹We’re kicking off a Dutch research collaboration under TKI Deltatechnologie with Wageningen University & Research (Marine Research) , Deltares and Waardenburg Ecology, with support from NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research and advisory from the SeaCURE project at the University of Exeter. With a budget of €450K, this project will assess impacts and efficiency of scaled-up Direct Ocean Carbon Capture (DOCC) projects by using a combination of literature review, laboratory & mesocosm experiments, and ocean modeling. This will inform safe designs of future projects, in line with our commitment to ensuring ocean health. Stay tuned for more details! 🔹 We’re thrilled to share that we’ve been awarded the CIEIF grant ($75k) to support our efforts by strengthening environmental impact assessments, predictive ocean modeling, and stakeholder engagement through partnerships, reinforcing our commitment to ocean health and responsible deployment. 🔗 Want to learn more? ❗Together with Stepien Adam, we finalised our research developments in the Arctic PASSION project by publishing the last Policy Paper - "Data-driven Subnational Decision-making in the Arctic: Towards Future Actions". 🌍 The recommendations outlined in this Policy Paper, aimed at strengthening the science-policy nexus and encouraging evidence-based decision-making, are grounded in four years of engagement with local and regional decision-makers and various stakeholders within the scope of the Arctic PASSION project. The concepts presented in the Policy Paper have been validated through consultations with local officials during two workshops held in December 2024 and January 2025 (in cooperation with the Arctic Urban-Regional Cooperation programme) and through structured interviews. 💪 Six comprehensive categories of proposed actions, perceived as the most feasible and garnering the greatest support from committed decision-makers and researchers, have been identified: 📑 Research results or outcomes should be usable and easily understandable. 💶 Invest in generating and aggregating data supporting the tracking of social indicators that link directly to climate and environmental strategies. 🌐 National and EU policymakers should support structured and long-term cooperation between Arctic municipalities and regions regarding climate mitigation/adaptation and economic transitions. ❄️ Develop Arctic-specific benchmarks for local actions and policies on green transition and monitor them with accessible, tailored tools. 💾 Facilitate the inclusion of data generated at the local level of governance into national and international databases. 🤝 Facilitate long-term collaboration between local decision-makers and local Arctic research institutions. ❓To gain a comprehensive understanding of why and how these recommendations have been established, as well as their significance, please refer to the full Policy Paper attached. 🌿 Upcoming Scientific Conference on Green Building Envelopes 🌿 From 11–12 February 2026, the scientific conference “Ecosystem services of green building envelopes – observations and modelling” will take place at the Haus der Wissenschaft in Braunschweig, Germany. The event will bring together researchers exploring the ecosystem services of vegetated roofs and walls, covering different spatial and temporal scales – from the leaf level to the city level, and from short-term observations to long-term studies. Organized within the framework of the bilateral research project GREENVELOPES (Carbon and water exchange of green building envelopes), this conference is a collaboration between CNRM (Météo-France/CNRS) and the Technische Universität Braunschweig. 🔍 Main topics include: - Regulating ecosystem services (e.g. climate regulation, air quality, carbon sequestration, flooding, pollination) - Providing ecosystem services (e.g. material and energy outputs, food, and resources) - Sustaining ecosystem services (e.g. biodiversity, habitats for plants and animals) 📅 Abstract submission deadline extended to 24 October 2025! More information about the conference can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eavvTSwS #GreenInfrastructure #EcosystemServices #UrbanNature #GreenBuildingEnvelopes #Research #Conference #Innovation #Sustainability

🔬 From Lab to Landscape: Shoaib Ahmed’s Dual Role Shoaib A., PhD candidate at NTNU, is a great example of how academic research and industry collaboration can go hand in hand. His work on soil restoration, together with partners like NIBIO Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research, Skanska, Pro Invenia and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, addresses sustainability challenges while staying grounded in practical needs. By bridging academia and industry, Shoaib gains insights that strengthen both his research and its impact. This is exactly the kind of collaboration Industrial Research School in Complex Systems aims to foster, where knowledge flows both ways and innovation is grounded in real needs. He’s also passionate about making science accessible, sharing his work at events like Industriuka AS and Kongsberg Agenda to spark dialogue beyond the research community.
