Job Fairs Are Not “Extra"; They Are Our Amanah “Over the years in this role, I’ve noticed one recurring misunderstanding: that organising job fairs or Pesta Konvo is something ‘extra’, piled on top of our teaching responsibilities. And yes, I won’t deny it; we are stretched thin. Teaching alone is already a full plate. Add career guidance, career coaching, and alumni work, and sometimes the load feels overwhelming. But when I held the career guidance post and pursued my Master of Government, I began to see the bigger picture. Through the lens of Maqasid Syariah, I learnt that education is not only about knowledge, but also about safeguarding livelihoods. Unemployment is not just a Brunei issue. It is a global one. Which means employability is not a side task. It is a community effort. As technical instructors, our Amanah goes beyond classroom teaching. We work closely with industries, revising and even revamping our curriculum to meet their needs. It only makes sense that we also ensure those needs are met through platforms like job fairs. Not to hold our students’ hands all the way to the door, but to create the signposts that point towards many possible doors. For me, this work is not something I can easily let go. It is both duty and social responsibility; to my students, to the industries we serve, and to the nation’s vision under Wawasan 2035. So, when job fairs mushroom across the country, sometimes even all at once, I don’t see them as ‘extra’. I see them as a reflection of our collective Amanah; to give every young person the chance to step forward into meaningful work. And perhaps the real question is this: beyond job fairs, what else can we do; together as teachers, colleagues, and industry partners; to make sure our youths see employability not just as finding a job, but as building entrepreneurial minds, ready to create opportunities as much as they seek them?

As part of the PIA State Conference, a Job Fair was organised to engage with third- and fourth-year planning students from universities across the greater Brisbane area. At the Mackay table, one of the talking points was on Mackay – where planning began. Did you know that Mackay was the first local government in Queensland to adopt a town planning scheme? Throughout the 1920s, various state governments began forming Town Planning Commissions and passing Town Planning and Development Acts, legitimising planning as a core function of government. In 1934, Mackay led the way by adopting the City of Mackay Planning Scheme- the first official planning scheme in the state and part of this broader movement towards town planning in Australia. The 1934 planning scheme, developed by Mackay-born Ronald Alison McInnis, laid the groundwork for future planning in the state, serving as a model for other local governments in Queensland. Its principles and framework formed the foundation of the Town Planning Schemes Approval Act of 1934, which paved the way for other local governments to prepare their schemes. The scheme focused on public health, efficient land use, economic development, and community needs. It also had a ‘regional planning’ view, considering future needs of areas outside the Mackay local government jurisdiction, including Eimeo, Seaforth, and Slade Point. McInnes was also pivotal in reviving the Town Planning Association of Queensland, a predecessor of PIA. In 1922 he pleaded for the establishment of a Central Planning Authority when he urged that a ‘combined effort was required for practical town planning’. #PIAqldconf2025
