UniSC's Agava'a Mentorship Program supports Māori and Pasifika students

Empowering young people to see themselves in higher education is an important part of what we do at UniSC. Our Agava’a Mentorship Program is changing the game for Year 12 Māori and Pasifika students across Moreton Bay – helping them envision futures in higher education by combining cultural belonging with practical guidance. Through hands-on workshops, on-campus experiences, and mentorship rooted in shared heritage, this initiative is more than just “preparation.” It’s about creating culturally safe spaces where students feel seen, heard, and connected – to their culture, to each other, and to the options before them. Our leaders of the program say it’s reciprocal: while students gain confidence and clarity about study and career pathways, mentors, organisers and educators are also enriched and informed by the students’ perspectives. We’re honoured to walk alongside these students as they take the next steps in their career journey, and we look forward to seeing where their futures lead. 🔗 More about the Agava’a Mentorship Program: https://bit.ly/4pMsQnw

Having spent the past two decades as a development activist in Nepal, I have seen first-hand the enormous need for such counselling services for our high schools student. The University of the Sunshine Coast's initiative is therefore a welcome development, and I would be thrilled to see such support extended to schools in the rural Himalayas of Nepal 🙏 .
